If you could do it over again, would you still have lifted your truck?

They don't lift race trucks, rock crawlers or anything that goes around an oval, car or truck. It's all for show fo sho on TW.

However. Can't help but think... I should go all out get a proper lift and 315s so my ride could look like this.

But the sensible side of me is taking over in my older age. I dont need this setup and will never use it in my daily travels, It looks awesome, but I'm not doing anything with my truck that warrants a setup like this. Think it through and if you want the look, go for it. Just be appraised that it costs money and you'll be replacing things a bit more frequently.

 

what are the specs on the wheels and tires (size and offset) that work on your stock truck and look so good in the photo?

Wheels are around 18lbs tires 44lbs so that really helps save rotational weight and fuel economy. I still lost 2.5 mpg, but the trade off was worth it.

Keep in mind I have an SR 4x4 so no fender flares makes the tire stance appear more aggressive than a flared taco.

All parts of my truck are stock/OEM upgrades other than wheels/tires/grille lights/mud flaps (which were very hard to trim and fit with this wheel and tire setup).

I did have to use a heat gun to massage parts of the fender liners up front near the bumper and near the cab mount on the driver's side to eliminate scrub radius rubbing, but I did NOT have to cut anything, just minor massaging and heat. Not ideal, but that's the price of negative offset with large tires

 

If you want 315s, do it.

 

We have the same wheels, you made a most excellent choice. Unsprung weight is a real thing, that most truck owners dont think about.

 

Indeed. Mpg was a concern driving around 100 miles a day, so the wheel and tire weight were my biggest concern to stay in the 23mpg range I was getting with my steelies and 245s.

 

Hard to beleive that is not lifted. Nice job.

 

Trust me. If my taco wasn't my DD I'd be all over it, I just dont want the cost, mpg loss, or the headaches that come along with stuffing 315s in the wells. My truck is brand new and I plan on keeping it til 400k just like my other tacos, so I'm in it for the long haul. Maybe down the road I'll play with it, but for now it isn't in the cards, plus a CMC and pinch weld beat down isn't really how I want to spend my time. Especially since my truck doesn't see much offroad activity. I'll save that for my 96

 

I drive this truck about 75 miles a day when I travel to work. I have a camry that gets really good mpg, but i cant get myself to drive it. Just not a fun car to drive. I also plan on keeping my truck for the long haul, mine is an 2018, and Ive put 67k on it.

 

Thanks man. Just an example for the OP that a lift really isn't necessary to get the look for less. Lifts aren't necessary for normal driving. I've been off pavement a handful of times so far and although I ain't traveling the Rubicon or MOAB, this stock base model is plenty good to get you around when your off the beaten path. Mostly stock, no lift, no worries

 

I hear you on the Camry dude. I found myself never driving my awesome genesis coupe turbo. It just sat. I was constantly driving my trucks -- I got to the point where I just sold the sweet sports car cuz I didn't really enjoy driving it anymore. I couldn't bring myself to drive it unless I was taking my wife out to dinner.

Some more picture whoring for those of you on the fence. Plenty of personal experience lead me to decide on no suspension upgrades, researching a lightweight wheel/tire setup with an aggressive stance that was a direct fit, and save some coin to put some functional OEM upgrades on my lowly base model 4x4 (grille lights, fog lights, bed lights, bed mat, interior nick nacks, and some low profile mud flaps - mainly for protecting my paint from crap getting thrown up from the negative offset wheels). You dont need to spend a ton of money to get a tough looking setup on a a truck that doesnt see the trail often.

 

Heres a bone stock reference. Remember, no lift on my truck as in all the pictures above. The right wheel and tire setup will certainly transform a grandpa ride to something that looks like a ton of money was dropped into it. Proof is here.

This is my truck when I got it. Not very impressive. $1450 on a set of wheels, lug nuts, and tires, another $500 on some functional mods, mostly from Toyota OEM, a bit of tinkering and minor wrenching -- you end up with the truck I posted 10000 pictures of in my previous posts.

$2000 gives you a custom look and some nice functionality. That's half the cost of a proper suspension upgrade -- no cutting cab, no extra wear on CV axles, no brake proportioning valve relocation, no needle bearing issues, no extra stress on an ungreasable driveshaft, no clunking to hunt down and rectify, no headaches.

Bottom line, if you ain't towing really heavy stuff regularly and you ain't pushing the limits of the stock suspension when your off pavement, then just stick with stock and replace things with OEM as they wear. You'll get the best service life from your vehicle that way

 

Heres a good look at some 3rd gens with no lift. My truck may not be most peoples eye candy. Negative offset is a turn off for most people, so theres a good variety of no lift tacos with aftermarket wheels to look at. Might help sway your decision to lift or not.

Why do the factory leafs suck? You have a 2020 -- kinda hard to imagine that after a year you can deem the factory leaf packs garbage? Experience? Is this just something you read, did you have a previous 3rd gen, or are you just going on what others have posted? Maybe your doing some offroading that warrants a stiffer and larger set of packs?

I overloaded my truck a bit when I first got it had about a ton of river rock in the bed. It was squatting bad but not riding on the bump stops. It was a short drive, truck was new, and I didn't have any issues, I guess time will tell if that kind of overloading effects the longevity of my leaf packs/Hitachi's, but I'm willing to bet it wont. Just so long as I dont make it a habit of loading the bed like that. 8 months of normal driving, light service trails, mild off pavement, trips for mulch and stone, picking up flooring, normal homeowner stuff, throwing bikes / ice hockey gear in the back. No issues with my stock leaf packs. Just curious why they suck -- I've read about people complaining about this, just haven't personally realized any issues.

 

I'm guessing he was refering to motocross, not so much just bombing on the trails and then yes hitting a massive blind double double or whoops section on a 450F is a THOUSAND times more risky / scary than wheeling your truck. Reason you don't see many older MX racers or MX racers that havent spent some time in the hospital, ask me how I know, and I definitely have respect for my bikes and ride within my skillset.

 

Hell yeah I'd lift my truck again. Now when I air down, my truck rides like a Cadillac on the trail and I can keep up with trucks that have a lot more expensive suspension than I do.
