The F-22 will absolutely carry a Sidewinder (AIM-9) if need be. Now, if it gets close enough to need it, the driver screwed up.

Lol very true about the US military being very specific. I've met quite a few US navy guys and they are all pretty much the same. Work on one thing and thats it. The best one though I met a guy off the USS Nimitz, I ask him what he did and he said "I strap down the left side of the planes" "Not the right?" I ask, to which he replied "Nope not my job. My job is to strap down the left side". In Their defense it gets them out into the field or on the ship faster the way they do it. Some trades in the CF can take 2 years before you even see your first unit outside of school. My First trade course was 3 months next was 6 and the one I'm on now is 18 months long thats not including outside trade courses (basic was 3 months, Naval Environmental Training was 1.5 months not to mention the dozens of weeklong courses here and there). 5 years in that's alot of time in school.

AIM-9 is the Sidewinder. However I believe the F-22 carries the AIM-9X version which is thrust vectored instead of using "rollerons" for control.

I know it doesnt hold the AIM-9X. the helmet for the AIM-9X is to big for the F-22 Cockpit.

hmmm. interesting. When I was on the AIM-9X program, I was under the impression it was designed specifically for the next gen fighter. At the time the YF-22 and YF-23 were still in competition. Maybe it was just bad dope. Or maybe I dreamed it? Oh well. thanks for the clarification.

There is an Improvment program that will allow AIM-9X for the F-22.

F-22 carries the AIM-9M right now but that will change.

AIM-9X and AIM-9M are in the same family but it uses a modified Mk 36 Rocket Motor and an Imaging Infared seeker. 9X also has an added Midbody connection like the AIM-120.

There should be no reason even an F-15 should get that close. If they get in a knife fight then somebody screwed up!

That is a Captive AIM-9M. Inert rocket motor and warhead but a Tactical Guidance Unit.

    f22_05.jpg
Just for Jeewiz info about the AIM-9. Quick summary not all inclusive.
AIM-9 was developed by the Navy in 1949(?). Basically using 5 inch stovepipe and as much electronics as a transistor radio. As great as it was it had alot of limitations. It could be fooled by the sun, the moon, reflections on lakes. AIM-9B was the first major version. AIM-9E was first version made for the Air Force. the J/N/P were all modifications to the E. The Navy had the G/H versions. The L was a Dual service model designed for head on engagments. The M had improved Counter-Counter Measures. The L/M uses a TMU-72 Argon bottle to cool the seeker when searching for targets while carried by the launch aircraft. Navy L/Ms use a cylinder on Nitrogen in the pylon of the aircraft. Then comes the 9X. A fifth generation Air to Air missile that with it's thrust vectoring can by fired over the shoulder of the Aircraft. If the pilot can see the target then he can shoot it.
BTW, nothing classified here. All this can be found on the internet.:)

    From the web page:http://www.visualintel.net/USAF/Wea...75439_5ZQyT/6/395869526_iiXXU#395869526_iiXXU

An AIM-9 Sidewinder missile successfully launches from an F-22 Raptor during a launch test Tuesday, July 25. The major milestone test evaluated the next-generation fighter's ability to fire an air-to-air missile from an internal weapons bay. Its primary air-to-air role, the F-22 will carry six AIM-120C and two AIM-9 missiles. For its air-to-ground role, the F-22 can internally carry two 1,000 pound-class Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM), two AIM-120C, and two AIM-9 missiles. (Photo by Judson Brohmer) (Photo courtesy of U.S. Air Force; seen on http://www.visualintel.net)

They're not saying which version of Sidewinder is being tested, but I'm sure there's more than a few 9-Ls and 9-Ms available for cheaper shots than the 120D AMRAAM.

<edit>Sheesh... guess I got aced out on that one. Thanks for the info Bub... always fun to learn more about these things.
