Why a winch?

what matters is how ‘fast’* your truck is going when it begins doing work on the rope, regardless of the size of the rope.

Yes, an insane acceleration over a great distance will produce more force (on everything) and might be dangerous (for a lot of reasons, but....

since we’re talking about acceleration (which can be constant) the longer the distance, at a constant acceleration, the more work is done. A longer rope allows more energy to be stored in the rope, at a smaller acceleration than a ‘fat’ rope, for the same truck. In other words: you don’t hit it ‘harder’ you hit it ‘longer’ to produce the same ‘yank’.

Look, anyone can do what they want, but, as I recall, the suggestion was ‘go skinny’, not fat... it’s not that simple.

I feel bad for your imagination. I’ve been in several situations where without a winch we would have been fucked. A lot of people on this forum really do wheel and its not for the "gram".

 

.... try the 385’ free rappel, at the third pit in the ‘Wilkerson Hollow Horror Hole’ on an old 9mm* Edelrid climbing rope some time.

(9mm has about 11% stretch)

 

My personal best was a 200ft ladder in 58 seconds and even conditioned for that (had to climb it every night for about a year) I was burning and winded at the top, usually take about 3 minutes at an "average" pace. Fuck a 4500' ladder.

 

Time.

You dont want to be the one stuck on a trail with a line of rigs behind you wanting to get by when you spend 30 minutes setting up your portable winch.

Yes, but if your rope is too heavy for your truck, it will jerk instead of stretching as it should. A properly sized kinetic rope will be more effective than an oversized one.

I never suggested using an undersized rope. In fact, I said that an undersized rope would be likely to snap.

This was my thought. I was in decent shape when I toured this mine, and I still can't fathom climbing that bitch. I can't for the life of me figure out why they went through the expense of installing a ladder for the entire length of that shaft. Not when they reinforced the tool shop and equipped it with a months worth of rations.

 

I'm having dejavu with this thread; portable winches and climbing rope.

 

I WISH we had thinner rope we use 13mm because it's the same stuff as the fire department, what our employer doesn't understand is we're not humping half as much gear as them nor are we allowed to do rescue so we don't need 13mm rope and 13mm rope doesn't stretch hardly at all! So coming to a stop isn't kindly to the undercarriage and you can get some speed using a Petzl I.D. for decent. The I.D. does weird stuff to the rope too, takes all the stretch out of the rope and trying to stuff it back in your bag is like dealing with those tent stakes with the elastic cord running through the middle.

 

Probably some OSHA required thing, granted one ladder at 4500' feet... I think I'd rather just die in the mine. also, 4500' ladder just makes me think of:
