What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Figured out the toolbox situation, started on a headache rack (which I'm still thinking about.)

 

I could beat you there. I bought my Miller 180 from a meth lab/BMW chop shop in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

 

This reminds me. I guess I'm going to bolt down a cheap tractor supply chest toolbox I found in a ditch. Drunk dude was flying down the road and got some air. Box flew out.

 

Lol. The instructions say to bolt it down, I guess that's why.

 

Was hoping for some tools. Just a lot of beer that was destroyed on impact.

 

Depending on the beer, that could be a tragedy. He must have really bounced.

Good lord. Same motor in my truck. I guess it won't be crapping out on me anytime soon....

 

That truck has seen some things. Runs and drives and has the keys lol.

 

Doesn't sound like a booster problem to me; just sounds like you lost power brakes since the engine was off.

 

If the check valve isn't bad or the diaphragm isn't leaking you should have two or three good pumps in it before you're out of vacuum assist though without the engine running. If it immediately goes hard there's something wrong

 

This. usually 2 GOOD pumps. 3 if your lighter on it..

 

I think it all depends on the situation - whether you were already braking, how firmly you apply the brakes, how steep the hill, etc. I've definitely been in situations where I thought, "oh crap, need to pull the e-brake" and I know Mike had a bit of an issue (though he was able to stop the truck) when he had some stalls on this last trip.

I guess all I'm saying is that I wouldn't immediately chalk it up to brake booster, without a bit more investigation.

Which by the way is a super oddball transmission and extremely outdated even at the time. But it makes sense in the bottom of the barrel basic cheap Taco. It had no electronics and no torque converter lockup. Just like an old Turbo hydramatic it was controlled by fluid pressure and a governer.

Its been a problem for awhile now, didnt just happen on the hill, thats kinda just what made me want to fix it lol. I remember being able to pump the brakes fine at least a few times with the engine off. What else would I look for? I just assumed the booster isnt holding a vacuum at all so maybe the diaphragm is broken

 

I wasn't satisfied with the inner bands on my tie rod end boots after I replaced the tie rods. I attempted to reuse the originals, but they didn't seem to tighten back as well, as I didn't have the proper tool to crimp them. Looking for an alternative, I purchased stainless steel zip ties in 16 inch length. Put them on, using the tightening tool that I purchased, but still didn't seem to be a good fit. YouTube provided a better way to tighten them for this application. Get them in position, as tight as you can by hand, then clip off the long tail, leaving about a half inch. Grab that tail with needle nose pliers, and roll it up. It tightens the band much more, and then the end isn't able to go back toward the clamping portion.
