06 manual third gear grind

06 Tacoma TRD off Road manual 6speed shifting into third gear grinds? Put new clutch in couple years ago.

 

Throw some mt90 in there and see if it helps. Make sure the clutch is bled and free of air. Slow down on shifts

 

Or a worn syncro gear.

 

I'd start by changing your MTF first. I purchased my truck with about only 30k miles on it, it was on OEM fluid still and it would often grind or feel notchy especially when it was cold and 3rd gear seemed to be the worst. I was gonna go the MT90 route but ended up putting in fords synthetic MTF. The nice thing is you can get it locally at your ford dealer but it is more expensive than some other options. Have had mine in there for about 80k and I can say it got rid of any notchy or grinding feeling issues even when cold and it is still working great.

I hear Redline MT90 does work great too but I haven't used it.

 

Yes when it’s a little cooler out or when I first run her she tends to grind going into 3rd gear. I’ll have to try it. Thanks so much y’all!

 

Not sure what that is? Can you explain. Toyota said you may need to replace transmission if it keeps getting worse.

 

Mine had same problem and I dumped the oil. Replaced with Redline MT 90 and the problem went away. Needless to say I am pleased.

Try double clutching 3rd. If it doesn't grind, likely the synchro is gone. I had a manual ranger that had the 2nd gear synchro go out without notice/warning. Just stopped working when I got off the highway. I just double clutched 2nd for about a year and a half until I got rid of it (and got my new to me 2013 base Taco). Wasn't worth fixing/replacing since it had 290K at that point.

MT90 is probably not the best. I have it and am not satisfied.
It's just overhyped and people repeat what they hear. It is easy for the average enthusiast who doesn't know how to drive to buy it and then pretend it's awesome. They don't know the difference.

It's the same in the Audi world with Motul Gear 300. Also a synthetic 75w90. That is not that good.
The few folks over there with half a brain all ended up eventually switching to something thinner/lighter like 75w80 for better synchro operation. And given that most manual transmissions only need to operate synchros, 75w80 probably works fine. Unlike a hypoid gear open rear diff or whatever, that may need strong gear oil only.

Worth mentioning that 75w80 was Fuchs Titan SintoFluid of some sort I believe, maybe their SAE version
there's a lot to pick from, both specific oil and different brands
they may also have different viscosities in practice
for example on motor oil, usually you can find a spec sheet on it. With stuff like HTHSV. High temp shear viscosity or whatever. And it will be different with different oils, even if both of them are "5w40" for example.
