Supercharger

Kinda silly question here but i've looking around on this site for a little while and does anyone have a TRD supercharger installed? Anyone ever looked a rear disc conversion for 05 and up?

Rear discs, i think its been done? but it might be on TTORA or xr underground.

 

Someone here did it and it was a disaster. I remember there were rubbing issues on the shock when the rear suspension was flexed. There were also other issues which I can't recall at the moment but the braking wasn't improved either for the amount of money and time it cost to do the swap.

 

Thanks, I couldn't remember who did it on here. I just remembered they didn't have many good things to say about it as far as functionality.

 

I have supercharger and i love it. Depending on what you want out of your truck and how you plan on using it you might love it or hate it. I actually get better gas milage around town with the supercharger now but worse on the freeway.

What do you want to know about the S/C???

 

just if its worth the money or not. a brochure doesnt tell you how people like it.

 

I personally love my supercharger and i think its worth the money. I wanted more power for towing out of my engine but couldnt justify going to a larger truck so I did the supercharger. Now it goes like a bat out of hell, even pulling a trailer it pulls long and hard. I havent met anyone that hasnt been happy with it.

I have had my truck up to 14,000 ft altitude without a problem with the supercharger. The only down side is your supposed to run high octane all the time. That can get difficult in some of the back woods places I go. You can run regular it just retards the ignition a bit so you dont get full power if you run regular. There really is no risk of pinging. The computer gets reflashed for the S/C and it automatically adjusts to altitude like all cars now days.

 

If you want all out speed and high end power go with a turbo kit. If you want grunt across the entire power band, good torque down low, and a smooth delivery then go with the supercharger.

If you use your truck as a truck the supercharger is the way to go, if you use it as a sports car then get a turbo.

Like I said, I love the power and especially the sound. Down low with the cat back exhaust it has a deep growl, then about mid RPM and up it switches from exhaust note to the high pitch whine of the supercharger scream. So if you a quite vehical then dont get it, if you dont mind the noise then go for it.

 

Any pics? Would love to see the set up. I work for VW/Subaru in the service dept. How about actually using the hood scoop to feed air. The Subarus use the same hood scoop vendor as Yota. Hmmmm....

 

Its worth every penny had one on my 2008 and loved the power. It goes like hell!

 

My 2009 Crew Cab off-road came with a supercharger. It's good power and everything but it kills my gas mileage. In the city, I'm getting 10-12 MPG and 16-18 MPG on the freeway doing 65 MPH. One time I drove at 55MPH and got 22MPG...

The stock 4.0 V6 has enough power already and I feel like having a supercharger in a truck is a waste because a truck's a truck. Leave the superchargers to cars.

Overall, the acceleration is a little better than the stock but not by much. And it uses 91 octane, which gets pretty pricey here in Cali!

That is not true. If you run anything below 91 you run the risk of detonation.

Sounds like something is wrong with your truck if you arent feeling a huge difference in power and getting terrible mpg.

My truck, one of the most modified supercharged tacomas, is getting anywhere from 20-24 city(depending on how heavy my foot feels, lol) and 25 on the highway. Keep it out of boost and mpg will not change.

 

My taco has no lift but have over sized tires that are 265/75/16. I'm using synthetic oil and never floor the truck....

As far as acceleration goes, I feel like it's a tad better but by not much. The Taco is a pretty heavy truck so of course, ain't going to experience sports car like acceleration and feel. My taco is an auto...

Maybe it's the gas I'm using... I've been using a lot of costco gas lately because it's cheap. $3.29 for 91 octane, compared to $3.35 at most name brand gas stations...

Whenever I'm on the freeway and not in a big rush to get to my destination, I'll drive between 55-60MPH to save gas on the number #3 and #4 lanes. haha.

 

TRD supercharged and loving it! I get around 14-15mpg average in combined city/highway driving. On the highway I can get 18 but I rarely see it. The truck is quick and that whine is so addicting.

 

Smanz, I am right about the same as you, 15-16 in town and 18-19 on the freeway. The problem I have is on the freeway its a 70+ speed limit where I live so its easy to burn the gas. I have been trying to keep it at 65 though. My truck is still brand new (1500 miles) so it should loosen up as i put some miles on it and hopefully get a little better milage.

But the biggest problem is as SManZ said, the whine is addictive. I find myself goosing the heavy pedal just to hear it spool up. Its a nice sound and between the S/C and exhaust I cant hear my tires anymore (Cooper STT). LoL

Followed by a T56 magnum Trans.

I am very happy with the set up.
