I was trying to figure out why the main shutoff was behind a locked door.

The home is a split level garage. The garage has stairs that go up a level to the first floor. At the base of those stairs is a huge crawl space. They use it for storage. The architect, at the request of the homeowner, spec'd out an exterior in that location. That's what was put in.

I just had two sets of French patio doors installed as outswings earlier this year. Makes way more sense for that application on this house. Also just watched a video last night of a new home build with the same thing. Maybe they are making a comeback?

I have an interior bathroom door that is the same way. There's no room to swing it in unless you remove the vanity.

Could be. Or it could be the homes I work on are large enough to not need to worry about saving space by using an outswing? I have to order a few doors today. I'll ask how many outswings they see ordered a month.

Interior doors are different then exterior. Interior doors only have a handing. They don't have an inswing or outswing like exteriors do. It sounds like it's just a bad design or the wrong handing was used. If the door still opened in but opened in the opposite direction would it open fully?

No, it would hit the vanity.

I only install outswing exterior French doors for customers. When they request inswing I talk them out of it.

I use them as often as I can , they seal about a million times better than an inswing

I took your advice and replaced our rear door with an outswing, I really like it and didn't have to cut the door or reframe anything.

Also discovered when I did this that my mud room is built on the deck

Make sure you have NRP hinges on an outswing

Bet that floors a little cool in the winter.

Did the same thing in my last house, outswing door gained me 2 cabinets in the kitchen, which is a big deal in an 800sqft 1919 house. My only suggestion is be aware of the wind or put a spring stop in it, mine got ripped out of my hands and added a few good dents In the door face opening it in a storm.

New toilet float valve and 1/4 turn shut off valve (thanks again, @Martyinco!) installed without incident. Only took about 30 minutes or so.

Next task will be replacing a $250 projector lamp that blew tonight in the theater room. It lasted just over 7 years with fairly heavy use so I can't complain too much.

I would have liked to make the jump to 4k but projectors run about $1,800. Can't justify that just yet.

Oh yeah it gets cold, good spot to keep beer in the winter though! Luckily that door is in a sheltered area and when it does get windy it tends to blow it shut.

Sure. Nothing special, just a couple white doors. Don’t mind the mess or lack of patio. Pavers are here, will be installing soon. Gotta finish the other hundred things we started. We have an identical set of doors over in the family room also going out. Let’s in tons of light and with them not swinging in, can be more flexible with furniture placement when we get to that point.
