Adding hard wired USB ports

I almost dropped this in lighting as well as one or two others but put it here as this seemed most fitting. Feel free to move it if it would be better elsewhere.

I'm trying to source some USB ports that I can hardwire into the truck and then fab into the cab in a couple of areas.

I see some from poking around online, but most are a nice usb port that you can mount.. but the male end is also usb. Needless to say I could always just splice and make it work.

BUT I know there has to be better options. Plus, I want some that are good quality as these kinds of items can have the tendency to be absolute garbage even though they look alright.

Any got a good source for these kinds of things or brand or just anything?

I had to browse around for a bit but I ended up getting and I use this powerd USB hub as it's uses 12v dc in from a wall wart, I just confirmed the polarity with a meter, cut the plug with a 3" tail then soldered on larger gauge wires and ran those to the blue sea fuse box I have in my engine bay. 7 USB charging ports up behind my mirror now, I use one for the dash cam, one for my scan gauge like device, one for the go pro when I have it mounted and still have spares for whatever.

This might be perfect. The dashcam is what started this endeavor and figured while I was at it I'd add a couple to the backseat area too. Maybe some constant on ports while I'm at it too.

But yeah main goal is for me to keep the dash cam cord from being draped across the vehicle. Lol. How long have you had that box? Still going strong?

 

About 2 years now. I used 3M Dual Lock tape to affix it, it’s held up to plenty of off roading without failing or falling. I did break one USB ports Tried to plug something in upside down at an angle (The ports face away from normal sight the way I mounted it.) it started to go, felt “right” then accidentally bent oddly and broke the plastic prong backer but 6 useable ports still, the nice benefit to this one is it has it’s own power switch too so I can turn it off if I’m not going to be using it or don’t want the devices draining the truck battery when it’s off. The other nice thing is it’s wired to be always hot so I can charge devices with the truck off.

the wires I just tucked behind the headliner, had to pull the A pillar trim and the door trim to route it around the airbags appropriately.

If I was really worried about the broken port, I could take the hub down open it up and solder in a new USB a female port.

 

Blue-seas makes some great hardwire ones. Look into those
