I have a Grizzly mill and a Grizzly lathe and they are both well made. I imagine the joiner would be no different.

Yeah, those aren't brakes. They supply the electricity to the commutator. They are made of carbon and graphite. They are a wear item but usually last a long time. I'm guessing there could be a brake somewhere else in the motor that might need cleaned.

I looked a little and there typically arent brake necessarily the machines use reverse polarity to slow the motor down, so could be related to sticky switch or dirty brushes:notsure:

    It's AC. Polarity doesn't matter.

Although I have read where they used DC for that by way of a diode.

Ya. See if I can exchange and get the warranty on replacement. Made do with the skilsaw for the last few minor touch up cuts. Need to flip and stain other side and will prob do another coat. Progress pic:

I would like to mention Transtint dye. If you are a woodworker you owe to yourself to try their dyes. Richer, deeper, more vibrant color with much easier, more even application.

Got a free walnut tree from a good friend last year. I actually got it for another friend who has a sawmill. He cut it up and gave me some lumber out of it. I made this mantle clock for the young man that gave us the tree.

I saw other people talking about issues with a chop saw not braking. My dad has a 20 ish year old Bosch chop saw and it just started doing the same thing about a year ago. No longer brakes at all and just spins and spins until it slows down on its own. Replaces the brushes, took the motor apart and cleaned it. Didn’t help at all. Has anyone ever found a solution to this or know how a saw motor brakes?

been putting in a lot of hours on the desk recently. So so so close to being done.

To recap what I ended up doing:
Sanded the top and drawer fronts down to bare wood. The rest of the desk just got a quick sanding with 120 then 220. The top got sanded all the way down to 400 grit. Fresh antique oil on the whole thing. Did 2-3 coats on the top and other lighter areas. Shellac to seal. Then water based poly.

I’m only putting shellac and poly on the top and drawer fronts because they’ll see the most wear and “touch” . I’ve been wiping on the water based poly on the top but it’s not going on thick enough (probably because it’s a brush on poly not wipe on). Going to try a fine bristle brush for the next coat or two and see if i can even things out.

Just stumbled upon this thread. I build custom furniture for a living so this is fun stuff! My website is dustandspark.com if anyone is interested.

Here's one of my favorite builds from earlier this year:

I think so as well. I think it sends DC current back through to brake it. If the diode has failed or the solder joint has failed, it won't work.
