Hey guys need some advise. I own a 17 TRD Sport(17k) My wife's CAR has died so she has been driving my truck and she loves it. The above truck is a buddy's of mine and he uses it for a sale job. Its a 16 TRD OFF ROAD, has premium sound, GPS, never missed a service with all records at toyota dealer ( his company pays for all maintenance, even the tires) transmission was repaired 10k ago. The truck has 148k. He said he would put on new tires (of my choice) and service it before selling it to me. We also have 2 kids and would split time between the two trucks. I also have a company truck I drive 5 days a week and an old beater to work. He want 17k. Any thoughts??

Nope ... your wife is going to hate you . Tacoma is not good for 2 kids she needs a suv or a minivan a 4 runner would work also so she has room for gear if kids get Into sports and such . Not a very good friend trying to pass it off to you .

Sounds like you’re set for now. The wife is happy driving truck and apparently it’s not an issue with the kids or she wouldn’t love it.

If you have a means to get back-and-forth to work and you have a work truck I’d say save your money and deal with this for a while and see how it works out before you jump in the something else. Just my two cents.

Because you have a beater to get to and from work plus your Tacoma I'd say just let your wife use your Tacoma more permanently especially if she really enjoys driving it, and whether it's a company vehicle or your beater you still have a form of transportation. I don't know your financial situation but I'm willing to bet most people are happy with another $17,000 in their pockets. I would wait on it, see how I feel in a couple months or a year. Something better always comes up and if it isn't a pressing issue now then don't fix what isn't broken.

But no, OP, I'm pretty sure you can get a better deal even if it's a second Gen

EDIT: I read it wrong at first. at the price and all the records, doesn't seem like a bad deal

Maybe I'm just an optomist, but I think its a good deal. It's been serviced by the dealer and kept up well, plus new tires. I'm sure the dealer has changed spark plugs and brakes and all the other 100k maintenance things. You should be able to get another 150k miles. It's hard to find a dependable vehicle for less than $20k, and I think this would be a dependable vehicle.

I’d maybe consider it if you don’t drive a lot. If you drive a lot, that’s a ton of miles. I’d want time to catch up with the miles if I’m paying that much, not the other way around.

I say, why not? Especially if he's throwing in tires? Why is he selling it though?

He gets a vehicle allowance from his employer as long as he a payment. So it keeps him in dependable transportation. The truck is just about paid for so he can get a new one and still receive the benefit. If he doesn't have a car payment he doesn't get the money. A pretty sweet deal. I should have never went into public service.

Damn you and your wanting to help people for the greater good! Interesting, I've never heard of that, but that's awesome lol. Honestly, the only thing I'd be skeptical about is it being a 2016 just because it is the first model year. Besides, you may be able to turn right around and sell it to Carvana for a profit and get something else. If you wanted to, of course.

I think it is depreciated to the point of putting another 75k miles over several years will mean it will still be worth $12k to someone.

So if you are ok with it, $5k to drive a tacoma for 5 years is not horrible.

I agree..... although it has a lot of miles, it is a Tacoma so that wouldn't worry me long as it has been serviced. It will easily be worth $12k in 5 years if you take care of it. Most ragged out Tacomas are still $10k these days.

I agree with photogr4x4, in that it doesn't sound like you need another vehicle...you already have 2 vehicles for 2 people...is there a need for another? Especially considering it's a twin of one of something you already have!
That said, I think $17k for that truck is not bad. It's not a steal, by any means, but it's a decent deal considering the maintenance & new tires (of your choice!).
So, if it were me, I wouldn't buy anything else! Save your cash! But if you are gonna buy something, your buddy's truck is a good option.
