I might have a challenging day ahead of me. Like a midget at a urinal, I’ll have to stay on my toes.

I was gonna ask that myself...

 

There used to be pheasants everywhere here in PA.
Now they gotta stock 'em.

The PA Game Commission has had "experts" looking at the problem....for decades now.
Must be nice to have a gig like that.
Big bucks to never solve anything.
Of course, if you arrive at an answer, there goes your consulting gig.

I can think of a few things off the top of my head.

1) When I was a kid, everybody shot hawks on sight as pests.
I'm not defending the practice, but there you are...different times.
Before the days of industrial farming, it was all traditional mixed farming.
Chickens ran loose to forage for bugs, etc.
And yeah, hawks took them from time to time.
What applies to chickens applies likewise to pheasants.
There are a helluva lot more hawks around these days.

2) Guys used to make good money trapping.
No more.
Raccoons, mink and particularly foxes are a menace to pheasant nests and brooding hens.

3) Farming practices.
In traditional mixed farming, there was always marginal land allowed to get brushy.
Brush provides cover for pheasants, cottontails, etc.
Economic pressure leads to farmers clearing every square foot that's conceivably productive.


The numbers of Ruffed Grouse have been declining for years.
They're a bird of the forests, so farming practices don't affect them.
But foxes and hawks (particularly Goshawks and Cooper's Hawks) certainly do.
