I know the gear whine has been beat to death but not with the Regeared trucks.
I had 4.88s done on 9/5 and have had a high pitched whine from 40mph all the way down on Decel.
It's not by any means loud you have to have the radio off and listen for it. Nitro acknowledges the fact these Tacomas are prone for gear whine.
I'm not to concerned at this point. I've got almost 1000 miles on my gears and no change.
Anybody else have THE WHINE after gearing? And what sound at what speed?

I have it, on two sets of gears. The first set was unbearable. The second set is tolerable and not much worse than the stock gear whine.

Who regeared you OP and did you get the specs from whoever regeared it like backlash?[/QUOTE]

Martin from Mobile gear installers. He's Miguels brother from Premier west gears. He's done a ton of Tacomas. Just like Premier they don't use a dial indicator they do it from feel. I don't agree with t at all but the pattern was perfect. He told me he guaranteed the backlash was 6 thousands and the preload was 15 pounds. Like I said the pattern was spot on perfect.

Absolutely. The guys been doing gears for over 25 years. I've been wrenching for over 25 years I just don't do transmissions and gears. He had me spin the yoke after he did and it had enough tension but why not take 5 minutes and check with a torque meter. I questioned him but he had no doubt it was right and again the gear pattern was dead on. The noise is faint just when coasting as soon as it hits 38 mph it starts until I stop or hit the gas. Nitro gears in Toyotas are known to make noise, Hell stock gears in these trucks do.

Then the bearings are moving around on the pinion shaft because the preload is incorrect...the math don’t lie only people do.

Is that the same shop that just did a group buy in SoCal?

Premier west is the group buy, Miguel. I used his brother Martin from Mobile gear installers. Both shops are run the same.

Some people do setup by feel. The guy who did the rear end on my stock samurai axles did it by feel. Was perfect on many many hardcore trail rides. My taco has been set up twice with all the precision equipment twice. It whined both times. All new bearings, new gears, setup is good. I actually watched and hung out in the shop the second time. He did it right. Nitro is fairly well known for whine. If I did it again I’d get a set from Yukon.

Well, there were multiple issues with the other shop, and you’re on your second set of gears (assumedly) by this company?

OP, I’m assuming you’ve read all the threads on regear. As you know it is pretty common on nitro Gears. Although less so for 4.88.

I have 5.29. Gear whine constant at 60-63 mph, and somewhere in the 40-50 mph range on deceleration.

Set backlash by feel. And people wonder why the differential whines.

If it isn’t already too late, find a shop that does it correctly. It really is cheaper to spend more and do it right than do it twice.

Not at all. I am not sure the whine is because of him that's why I started this thread.
the guy does the gears for most of the shops in So cal. 4WDparts, rebel off road.
I don't doubt his talent just his means of install. I watched the whole process and expected to see a dial indicator for backlash and a pinion preload torque meter. The guy has done hundreds of these Tacoma gears with no complaints that I could find. Well respected by all the local shops.
My point of this thread is to see how common it is for Nitro gears to whine.
