Checked out autozone & O’reilly today they had Lucas oil 85W140 for $8.99/qt so just over $50 for 6....checked out Nitro Gears’ oil 80W140 and it was $21/qt...significant difference in price but coming straight from the source you can expect that. Is there really that much of a difference? Especially for the price. Asking for those who use either Nitro oil or Lucas oil. Maybe I’m just overthinking it but just want to do it rite

Nitro is synthetic, Lucas is Dino. You can get Lucas cheaper. Amazon is at $8 per, and advance Auto you can get a 25% doing buy online pickup in store.

Sorry about the late reply, I totaled my Tacoma during the summer and haven't been on here since. Padens Drivetrain in NE Portland. The guy who runs the shop is an old dude that has been doing this for over 20 years. No issues after install except that the underside of the truck was a little messy, ie greasy finger prints and such. Nothing a little Simple Green couldnt fix. If I ever have drivetrain issues I'll be going back Paden's.

Some relevant info in this thread...esp first post (see photo)

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rear-differential-fluid-level-how-much.544343/

From a quick search and read I believe your diff is a 3 quart fill...but "thread wisdom" also seems safe in assuming "fill it til' it drips" as a safe protocol.

I’m a dumbass...I misread the manual. It’s confusing at first but my simple mind figured it out eventually haha! 3.22 qt is what mine requires. Thank you for the response!

Just like what was shared earlier, the white sticker on the driver door shows your model. Mine is GRN310L-PRTSHA.

5.29’s going in tomorrow! I’ve read every page on this and I’m looking forward to feeling the difference. Just in time for my rear bumper and camper too.

Call me lazy but I don’t really feel like shuffling through 80pgs of this thread to see if it’s been answered, but I got a re geared to 5.29’s a few months back and don’t really drive at 85 all to often low and behold last weekend 85 was the biggest down point. No OvTune on it and 85 I began to throttle down on it’s own.

I’m just trying to catch up on all this now? So with 5.29s the truck will max at 85 due to programmed governing?

also - has there ever been a confirmation of which brand of gears tend to while less on the highway? Nitro? Revolution? Something else?

I've noticed that when the pinion shim is moved behind the pinion head rather than behind the race, there is significantly less whine. Why? No fucking clue, but it worked.

No prob. Also tell em to start with a 0.081 pinion depth shim.

Is moving the pinion shim after it’s already been assembled and installed something that’s feasible or does it have to be completely disassembled?

My rear gears whine very loud to the point I’m considering having the rear rebuilt to try and quiet it down.

Of you have a crush sleeve, then pinion gets removed, big pinion race gets removed to take the shim out. Then the big pinion bearing needs to be pressed off of the pinion to move the new shims there. If solid collar then would need to shave some material off of it and re shim it as well. Will need new pinion seal in both situations.

Thanks for explaining the process. I think I’m going to switch from 75W-90 to 80W-140 and see if that helps slightly. If not I guess I’ll call the shop that did the install and see if they’re willing to cover some cost of getting it rebuilt locally or something.

i saw on ecgs for their prebuilt 3rds there is the option of crush sleeve or solid spacer.

    do you have a recommendation?

is that also an option I should discuss with driveline shop if I have them do it vs buying a prebuilt 3rd member?

I'd def recomend solid pinion spacer of you're going to use your truck off road. Nitro is starting to add them to the kit.
