The pully bearing on the airconditioning clutch is bad, and I'm trying to take the clutch apart.

After I removed the bolt on the compressor shaft with a 10 mm socket wrench, the hub will not slide off from the splined shaft.

I've watched numerous youtube videos showing that the hub slides right off.

Seems I might need to use a wheel puller to get the hub off, but I will need to make access for the wheel puller. The compressor is still in the vehicle, not on a work bench.

Making access for the wheel puller means more work, maybe removing the radiator, etc.

I am hoping there is a way to free the hub without using a puller. Anyone have any ideas?

It should come right off. My guess is that it is rusted on. Underneath that bolt the threaded part (female) is about an inch in length IIRC and so is the splined part that attaches to the clutch hub. Try using your favorite rust penetrant sprayed directly in that bolt hole and also in the air gap between the hub and clutch.

The hub has some sort of rubber(?) cushion piece in it (maybe its leather?) to reduce shock when the compressor engages so you may want to look for something that is safe to use. Then tap, tap, tap around the hub to try and set up some vibration. I would hold off trying to use a puller of any kind because it could ruin said cushion piece and you will have to then source a new hub.

BTW, the bearings on the clutch are on the rear and are a dual bearing. They are staked in. I have used a press to directly press the bearings out and then clean up all the little staked areas using a Dremmel to the point of making sure you can get in the new bearings. The little stakes can be restaked if you are very careful and don't slip off and ruin the seal on the new bearing. Alternatively I have set the new bearings in and used the Loctite sleeve retainer.

Thanks for the info. Got hub off by prying betwee the clutch faces. Yes, was rusted on. Found this info afterwards that would have made job easier.

    PULLING HUB
The hub is secured to the compressor shaft with a 6mm bolt that theads into the shaft. Remove the 6mm bolt. The hub itself is tapped for an 8mm bolt. Thread an 8mm bolt into the hub to pull the hub from the shaft.

I am going with a new clutch assembly from Camelback Toyota. It includes coil, rotor, and hub. Haven't ordered yet.

I am trying to find the part numbers for the 2 snap rings. Camelback has them for models other than 3rd gen 4Runner, but doesn't seem to have them 3rd gen 4Runner. I think this is an oversight by the person entering info into their website.

Anyone have these part numbers handy? Thanks.

Are you looking for the parts for a 3rd Gen 4Runner?
If so, what year and engine?

BTW, this is the 2nd Gen Tacoma section. They have a 2.7 and 4.0 engine.

Its a 3.4L engine. I heard 3rd gen 4Runners are same as 2nd gen Tacoma. I could be wrong.

I called my local Toyota dealer. I will be going there to place an order I guess. Thanks.
