So one of my favorite rock crawlers ever started as a crew cab, 8 ft bed, 3/4 ton chevy. He slapped a D60 under the front and wheeled it all over the place. Its amazing how well it did. There were obstacles that he could just roll right up because by the time the rear tires were in it, the front tires were out of it. K5's and TJ's would be sliding all over the place and he'd just walk right up. It was awesome.

Eventually it did get shortened a bit - when he tubed the entire rear half. But still. I think every wheelbase length has pro's and cons.

there is definitely something to be said for having a bit longer wheelbase for stability when climbing. Like you said, every wheelbase has its pros and its cons.

The venerable veteran in the St Louis crew has this Mondo 2009 trail limo Taco that is built like a tank. It doesn't necessarily fit around or between everything... But what it doesn't get around, it can bully it's way over.

Keep in mind your truck is rated for 5000lbs towing capacity, but easily 1/3 of that (or more) ends up on the tongue.... And the truck is only rated for 1100lbs of cargo, so if you've got a third of 5000lbs (roughly 1667 lbs) on the tongue of the trailer.... Then yes, you're going to squat.

I've been pretty satisfied with the towing abilities I've got from this truck. Pulled a few cars on transportation trailers and regularly haul a 4 place trailer with two Jetski's to the lake up/down some steep grades. All on a 3" lift and 34's. Not that I would say this is the best truck to do stuff like that day in and day out but for the 1-2 times a month I need to tow anything, it's been solid.

Side note: I'm running OME Dakars and manual gearing so my experience will be different from the auto guys.

You’d have been better off lowering your top speed and moving the shift lever out of drive to a more suitable gear. Max speed when towing loaded or not in CA is 55 but rarely do I see that observed. I don’t feel much sympathy for their lack of mileage or stress levels. Put it in the slow lane where it belongs and clam up.

This is Toyota. If they could get away with charging premium prices on the grounds of “quality” and “dependability” while keeping 4 wheel drums and no power steering, they would. LoL
