Hey guys. Going through some legal issues right now with a dealer. A dealer sold me a truck with a bad frame and some other safety issues that weren't fixed before taking it off the lot. Things like calipers, steering rack and components, and e-brake cables corroding / tearing. They did NOT disclose to me that the frame was bad and I'm just trying to come up with what the truck was REALLY worth having been sold with a bad frame and other listed issues. The truck itself is in great shape but there are huge perforations in the frame that should have been spotted when doing their safety inspection before listing the vehicle. The truck also sold the day it was listed but "became available again" after a few days which tells me the person that purchased it before me became aware of the issues.

Again, just looking for a value of a truck with a bad frame if I were to list it on Craigslist or someplace else.

    Thank you!

Depends if the frame is eligible to be replaced by Toyota.

Give the dealer hell until they either replace it or give you a refund.

Let’s just say it’s out of the replacement window. What would you value the truck at?

If the frame is junk it's pretty much salvage value. 10k-15k off of book value. Get a qoute for frame replacement and also add the other failed parts that would have to be replaced for supporting documentation. Also factor in the amount of time the vehicle is unavailable.

There’s no way a ‘10 was sold new before October of ‘08, so your truck is definitely eligible for a new frame.

I just can’t imagine why you didn’t crawl underneath it or have someone inspect it before you bought it.

Well. A truck without a solid skeleton is as valuable as scrap. I’d probably pay 2-3k (and even thats high, but it’s only 10 years old) for one and swap the frame under (your looking at least 4k in pets if you do it yourself and buy it all with employee level discounts)

Eh. Laws differ state to state about selling cars and trucks like this without disclosing it.

Did the same dealer that sold you the truck tell you it didn't qualify for the frame replacement?

It was not a Toyota dealership.

My 2009 just got approved for a frame replacement this week, I'm in Canada. I think it's 12 years from the date of first use, which I think is the date for when the truck was first registered. My replacement window was open until May of 2021. Not all the service advisors seem to be aware of this, I had talked to a service manager at the dealer before hand who had to correct the advisor that it was indeed still in the replacement window.

Then it's going to get a lot more interesting because they can plausibly say they had no knowledge of the Toyota frame problem. I'd recommend going to a Toyota dealer and having them inspect the frame, then see what they offer. If they decline to replace your frame because you just purchased the truck, things will get pretty ugly for you. Your best bet will be to have the selling dealership refund your money.
