6 Spd Manual - Electronic Display of Current Gear on Dash?

So...My truck is a manual...And, you know it's a manual bc I told you it's a manual...

One thing that kills me is that it doesn't show the current gear that I'm in on the dash while I'm driving...I have a short term memory, and sometimes I forget I made it to 6th and try stomping on it half way up a hill only to find no power...

Has anyone figured a hack to electronically display current gear on the dash for a 6spd manual?

I often wonder why there isn't a gear display myself.
My bike is a 6 speed also and I'm always referring to the gear readout on the dash. It's actually quite handy.

The ECU does determine the gear that we are in. How? I have no idea because, in that respect, all the sensors that we have are Neutral, one on each end of the clutch, Tach, and Speedo. My only guess is that the ECU compares Tach to Speedo? Aftermarket gear indicators from motorcycles do this.

Unfortunately, no one has yet hacked the center display. That is the main limiting factor.


Two things that I might suggest:

-- Develop the muscle memory to tell 4th from 6th by feel?

-- Glance at the tach? 6th at 60mph is about 2,000rpm.​

Either of those should take similar or less effort than a gear display?

 

Just sayin....There is going to be no sympathy on TW for that post. IT'S A MANUAL TRANSMISSION!

Tape one of these to your dash and then slide it to whatever gear you're in.

Drive a manual enough and you will fine tune your senses where you can just feel the truck and know what gear you are in. The world has lost the feeling of driving a truck vs just sitting in it and pointing it where you want to go

I don't know anything about scangauges or ultragauges, but all that information should be available through OBD. I wonder if those can do math.

Good question. I know there are PIDs for TC mode and obviously gear for the ATs.

Nothing has jumped out at me for the MTs, but really haven't looked. OBD Fusion with Toyota specific PIDs might?

A few years later I added a junkyard tach, turns out thats about 2100 rpm. That car got a whole lot faster that day
