50k miles a year? Not for that price. Offer him 12k. That trans job isn't going to be cheap. Just because he says it's the torque converter doesn't mean that it has anything to do with the torque converter.

Gamecock said it best....not a steal. So you could look around if you are determined to pay $17K see if you can find one with less miles or more features.

The transmission was fixed 10k mi ago he mentioned in the original post. Still it is a lot of miles....being a 2017 they are likely all highway which isn't that bad. The Tacoma should hold up well for at least another 100k. I think I would offer the guy $15k but he might be insulted at that point.

As others have said - it's not a steal - but considering it has had all the required/needed maintenance, it is not a bad deal, with a set of new tires (Michelins maybe)...IF you really are going to buy another vehicle. I put a LOT of miles on my personal vehicles (77K on my 2019) and get it serviced every 5K. I'd offer him 15500 and see if he is Ok - maybe settle at 16.

It's a fair price. A lot of miles though.. I would look into the whole maintenance history before pulling the trigger.

I just checked Autotrader , any distance , crew cab , 4x4 , AT , less than 150,000 miles and less than $17,000 and zero matches not even an SR . So with the good service records , new tires and highway miles i would say buy it .

I always laugh when I read the “not big enough for two kids” advice. This modern world we live in boggles my mind. I am from the time, when men still had high testosterone, and consequently, whatever car you had was big enough. Family of five in a civic sedan? No problem. It has 5 seatbelts doesn’t it? It’s only since T levels have gone down that everyone needs bloated vehicles to haul their families around in.

Buy the truck. It’s an OG 3G and those are cool.

The price seems fair. If you like the truck, I would offer him $16k and not take ownership until the new tires are on and maintenance service is done.

The only thing I would be concerned about is why the transmission went out relatively prematurely. Did he tow a lot with it? Did he redline it at every stoplight? Was it just a fluke? Is there any warranty on the transmission work? I would be more willing to purchase this specific truck if the transmission had a 2-3 year/25-35k mile warranty on it.

So you have your sport, company truck, and a beater you take to work. Why do you need a 4th truck?

Totally right on the space families think they need. I mean, no need to suffer if you can afford a larger vehicle, but my two sisters and I piled into our Dodge Horizon for looooooong road trips multiple times in our teens. A manual tranny at that!
