No worries. Just to finish the thought, the strain occurs because the area of the glass that gets heated expands slightly and where that meets up against the area of the glass that hasn't been heated you get strain that makes the part very fragile. Some parts can actually break under their own weight if they don't get annealed timely enough.

I'll add one more question, how long did it take to do the long welds?

Not 100% sure what itll be used for, could be theyre going to heat metals or minerals inside it to make alloys or composite materials or it could just be a non reactive container for some experiment. In general, people buy quartz glassware because its extremely heat tolerant unlike borosilicate glassware (like your baking dishes) and its extremely pure. Its 99.99% pure fused quartz, where as borosilicate glass contains many elements other than silicon. Thats what I meant by non reactive, for instance if someone does an experiment where the materials are sensitive to lead, they may not want to use borosilicate because it contains trace levels of lead, as well as many other metals and minerals.

As for cost, thats harder to say because the orders i get have material cost worked into price and also somewhat confidential but id estimate the labor on the part I've been showing you guys is somewhere around $300-$400.

Those long welds took like 5-10 minutes a piece, plus some time for set up.

Cut some pieces with the plasma cutter and a few minutes later I smelled something burning. Looked over and the trash can was smoking. Found the culprit.

Don’t know what these do but I had to machine the block with the hole and weld it on.

No, fab shop bent them. They don't move. The shiny part is grinder tracks.

No. We've made several of these and it took a while for the fab shop to realize that. I don't know how many they did wrong. My boss finally made them a 3D drawing :D
