Duractrac vs Wildpeak

I’m about the get rid of my duratracs. Maybe it depends on the part of the country their used it but I found them exceptional in deep snow and winter driving in Colorado. They are excellent off-road but they do seem to have a weaker sidewall then some models. Like others have already stated here it seems they wear unevenly. With rotations every 5k and perfect alignment my front tires are toast, meanwhile I have like 40% read still left in the rear. Good tires overall but are noisy especially as they wear. Looking at wild peaks or NRG or STT Pros or ST maxx for my next tires.

 

Maybe your right. I just measured. They are 5 to 6/32nds. New is 16/32. Put them on at 2500 mi and the truck will turn 60K by this Saturday.

Might of gotten longer life if I would of rotated them more then 2 times.

 

I bought brand new Duratracs back in May but made the switch to KO2 not even 2 weeks ago. Why you may ask. Well 4 America’s/Discount tire shops over a 4 month period try to get the balance right on the duratracs. They were 265/75R16 c load. Not one of those shops could ever get it right. Everyone one was like who balanced these for you lol. Everything was tried, road force balance, regular balance, finger cone balance. Just wasn’t happening. So I made them take those back and exchanged for the KO2. Wow what a night and day difference. Glass smooth so I could enjoy my truck again finally. Anyway, there’s my story with the duratracs. Quite possible a bad set but didn’t want to try another one so easy switch it was. Here’s some pics for reference.

 

Funny how you always get mixed reviews didn’t rotate my duratracs for 25k and they still had even tread after rotating every 10k for 60k miles. I have no experience but I have a couple friends who have good things to say about the wildpeaks.

 

As in 16 tires? If we ever go into a doomsday scenario I want to be with you. The most over prepared I’ve ever met. Good for you.

Nice ko2s! They are great tires. Silent on the hwy and super smooth.

My duratracs needed a lot of weight to balance i remember. They had to stack so many weights on top of each other, the tech wasnt impressed but they rode great about a year. Then i sold the truck.

 

Been running duratracks on our work trucks. Alot of offroad driving. They were good for the first few thousand miles. But they wear out way to fast.

 

Yes I love the KO2s. Ran them before with a ton of success. Wanted to try the duratracs though but yeah I couldn’t stand that not one shop could balance them correctly. Plus they all point the fingers at each other. Saying things like, wow I can believe those guys at that shops balanced these this way hahah. Then I would leave and it would be worse than before. It was a long hard few months with those tires. Now I’m enjoying life with going back to the tried and true KO2.

 

I haven't run duratracs but can say I love my wildpeaks. No complaints from me.

What kind of work ?

 

I have been running Wildpeaks for a few months now. When I first put them on I quickly noticed something off. First my strut mounts had worn along with my sway bar bushings. After some research here I just decided to replace everything and start fresh including alignment . Probably the best decision I have ever made. Now I can air down and rip roar down firetrails. Air up and hit the highway at 80 plus.

 

You run 80 psi on the hwy in your wildpeaks?

 

No 32psi 85mph.

How do you like the ko2s in e load? I had some and they were extremely tough and great in the dessert and snow, got 60k out of them. I just hated how harsh they were compared to the c load duratracs. They only make c load ko2s for 17 inch rims.

 

So, a dude from Facebook Marketplace was selling new Duratrac truck tires for $1000 but I worked him down to $800 (they are worth ~$1200). They were brand new and the size I wanted, with lots of pictures. Story was he sold his truck before he could put em on. Ok but the problem is they were 2.5hrs away. I like driving and had nothing better to do, so I decided to go for the ride with a buddy of mine. And one hell of a ride it was...

He told me to meet at a Tim Hortons in butt fuck nowhere Quebec. I messaged him when I was 30mins out and he confirmed he'd be on time. The guy (let's call him Alex) ends up showing up 15 minutes late in a small car. No tires in sight. He says they couldn't get them to fit in the car and to follow him. He was nice about it and it seemed reasonable. About 15 minutes down dark windy middle of nowhere roads, we arrive at a house. The whole vibe is kinda creepy. Turns out another guy (let's call him Brad) is the one with the tires, and Alex had simply listed them for him. So we're at Brad's house and he tells me the tires are his other Buddy's house. He asks for a ride but my back seat had some stuff in it so it wouldn't work. Alex gets in to a different car and drives Brad to house #2 as I follow again.

We get to house #2 and it's a redneck junkyard kinda place. He says the tires are in the back of a garage. We go behind the garage and at this point another dude shows up (let's call him Carl) and I'm well in to thinking this is how horror movies start. My buddy keeps looking behind him as if he's gonna get jumped. We walk through a field for a bit and it's pitch black. We end up at this old Jeep with no tires inside. Brad apologizes and says his other buddy (let's call him Dave) was supposed to leave them there, but didn't. So he tries to get a hold of Dave but Dave doesn't have a phone (of course he doesn't...). Brad suggests I follow him again to Dave's house this time. Alex, Brad, Carl, and a little girl get in to a car and I follow.

We kind of drive back to where we originally were, and we end up pulling a U-turn in the middle of the street. They missed Dave's house, but the whole thing just felt 'off'. Anyways, they find it and his driveway is literally a long gravel hill that seemed to be 1/4 mile long for God's sake. We get up to the house and Dave is burning a bunch of scrap in front of what looks like an abandoned house with a shack type thing beside it. At this point, my buddy literally asks if I have any weapons in the truck. I hand him a box cutter and say that's about as close to a weapon as I have. Anyways, Alex and the girl stay in the car while Brad and Carl get out to talk to Dave. They seem to kind of argue but I was in my truck and couldn't hear very well. My buddy says we should go but I wanted to wait to hear what they said. Plus, I have to drive 1/4 mile down a rocky hill backwards, and I don't want anyone running after us for bailing. So the 3 guys keep talking and all of a sudden Carl clocks Brad in the face 5-6 times. The girl starts screaming and the three guys are fighting.

I start backing up immediately and am like F this noise. I bolted and got outta there.

I stopped for gas at the nearest station. Got some crappy gas station sandwiches, and drive 2.5hrs back to my buddy's place to drop him off. I wasted about 6 hours and $50 on gas and left with no tires.

Honestly, I do not notice any change in ride quality. They are smooth in every application. Now are the heavier, of course they are that I’m not denying but I’ve personally haven’t noticed a single change in ride or mpgs. Great tire and do not regret it for one second. Take care.
