And, like most things its all about what you prefer being the end user, the lumberjack in thr Adirondacks would prefer a single curve handle with a double bit axe head. Every other lumberjack around the country thought they were crazy, but its what the way they liked them.

I really appreciate all the help and information. The heads have been soaking in vinegar now for at least 36 hours. I just went down to the garage and added some salt (all I had though was sea salt and that doesn't have iodine so we'll see if it helps). I could see some minor difference and there was some flake in the bottom of the pan. Later today I am taking them out and washing them off. Then I will finish with the wire cups, the file and ultimately the puck.

What makes the head of your axe black like that?

Funny, even before I had the need for one, I've always felt like I should have an axe. It's like any other primitive tool, weapon or ability. It's in our DNA to be able to sustain and protect ourselves. I dare any guy to tell me they've never thrown a broken broom handle or anything else similarly shaped pretending it was a spear, or used a stick to sword fight with a childhood friend.



Edit - I just moved the pan to the outside in case the reaction with the added salt caused a mess. I couldn't resist checking out what was happening. Amazingly, the end of each bit for about a 1/4 of the way back is completely rust free and black lick the head of your axe!!!! That's amazing!!!! I guess I am leaving them in there for as long as it takes. I'm going to get some regular vinegar and regular salt and refresh the solution and see what happens.

Recently got my truck (2018 TRD Pro MT). The previous owner put on armor and upgraded the tire but no suspension yet (in my plans soon). Think Id be fine going up Union Spring in my set up?

Thanks for the advice. New to off-roading but as a long time hiker/mountaineer super excited to use it to get more places deep in the wilderness.

 

Really the only recommendation is don't be afraid to use your locker and, having a manual, 4lo is your friend so you don't have to constantly ride the clutch. I'll go as high as 3rd gear when in 4lo when cruising through a trail. If I need to go faster, then it's time to go back into 4hi.

Love driving MT so even if its a bit more work to learn the off road ropes it feels much more fun

 

I agree, I have an MT and wouldn't have it any other way. There's definitely a bigger learning curve offroad for us but once you get the hang of it, you'll love it.

 

Are you down to hit up some trails and get muddy? What do you drive now?

 

Hell yeah, I'm probably going to flagpole knob for the trails tomorrow, then Hilux Surf OffRoad facebook group is having a truck meet sunday morning in Frederick. All toyotas are welcome, y'all should come.

Happy Friday everyone! My truck is jn the shop getting the RCI engine skid on and front brakes and an oil change. Normally i do it but i dont have the tools to do the skid so I figured while it was being done might as well do some maintenance. Also adding the fumoto oil plug drain valve.

all that to say what oil is everyone running? Im just under 150K and have been running royal purple full synthetic.
