Going to look at a 2007 Tacoma access cab 4wd 2.7 manual and I’m wondering what the motor is like on them. I had a 2000 2.7 but obviously the gearing is probably different/better. I do plan on running at least a 285 so I’m just wondering if it would do okay with that size tire. Also not sure if I’ll do it but some people put the pedal commander on there truck and seem to like it? Not sure if there’s other options but I’m up for recommendations. Obviously not looking for a race truck if I’m going to look at a 4 cylinder but I also don’t want the slowest truck at school if that makes sense lol.

I went from a 2.7 manual to a 4.0 manual, it’s not slow if you pin it all the time and the motor takes it fine, but if you go bigger than 265 tires you would probably want to regear, it bogs down off the line and you have to burn some clutch plus you’ll be at redline in 3rd gear if you have any uphill/weight/drag accelerating/passing and sometimes even maintaining highway speeds, smaller tires or different gear ratio will make it more capable/fun, if you want something that at all feels fast get a v6 with a stick, thinking about going back to 4 cylinder myself because you could eek out 21 mpg even with some larger tires on it which means 400 miles per fill up instead of around 300 miles a tank, decent difference on road trips, and it was definitely very fun to drive

im only 16 and the reason I’m even going to get this truck is because a 18 wheeler pulled out in front of me and totaled it. I would definitely go look at a v6 but they are really expensive even for a 2006. This one is at least in the right price range for me. My brothers buddy had a 2016 with the 2.7 and said it would push a 33 just fine. It may just be something you get used to until you step up to a bigger motor. I’m sure it’s faster than my 2000 which had 265s at the time. Does anyone know what gear ratio would be in that truck?

You’ll need to use the gears. Even more with larger tires.
    I had a 2.7 AC PreRunner.
Same gearing as the 4WD trucks.

Man y’all are making me scared to bite the bullet on a 2.7 then. I haven’t driven it yet so we’ll see but obviously a v6 would be nice. I just can’t believe what they want for a Tacoma with the v6 and 200k on them. Granted this is a 2007 with 200k but only asking 10 and it’s been really taken care of.

I have a 2007 2.7 MT regular cab. I have driven a manual transmission all my life (been driving since 1970), so the attention to the power curve/shifting points is just second nature to me. I like to drive my vehicle (vs. just steering it around), but if you're not comfortable with that scenario, you might want to look at a 4.0, I suppose.

    No reason to be afraid.

If you run 285’s , just drive it like it’s a 1960 era dump truck. Lol

I’m 16 but I grew up on a farm. I had a 2000 that was also stick so I knew where the power was on that one lol. (Around 3k) and I agree it’s way more fun. I’m just worried about it because I live in the country so I have about a 30 minute highway ride either direction. I had a 2000 so I’m used to getting passed but just wondering if it’ll handle 75-80 to keep up with traffic a little better while also pushing a 285

considering I’ve driven quite a few of those with 300 bales of hay in it I know exactly what you mean. Like I said to the other guy I’m just worried about it handling 75-80 on the highway with a 285. A lot of country roads so I don’t need a fast 0-60 but I’m also 16 so obviously I’m not always driving slow lol.

I live in the country, too, the kind of country where I'm usually going 40-45. But when I do go on a road trip, I usually cruise at 70 - I'm an older guy, and 70 is just fine, thank you :) But it easily rolls up to 75-80 when I'm not paying attention. I don't know about 285's, and I don't know if an access cab makes a material difference - I have a regular cab. I think what you need is a test drive...

what size tire are you running? And what rpm are you at around 70-75? And I would assume it adds a few more pounds to it. I’m going to look at the truck tomorrow so we’ll see just trying to get a few opinions on it from people who drive it daily.

I would assume it’d be faster than the 2000 2.7 I had. This truck is 1500 pounds or so more but I would think better gearing and just the fact that it’s newer itd do better

It'll be faster than you think. But still slow.

    Ps
Check the frame for rust or rust holes. By the cats is a popular spot

A 10 year old truck with 200 K? First thing I'd do is plug a decent scanner into that thing and check for a) recent ECU reset and b) any realtime values that look abnormally high or low at idle, i.e. ones that might trip a CEL in another year or two.

I checked the frame and everything and had rust back behind the rear tires

    I have a 08 regular cab 2.7 5MT 4x4.

It drove fine with the P265/70R16 tires the previous owner put on the truck. I went up to LT265/75R16 Duratracs and I felt the extra weight. Not horrible, but I definitely noticed the difference.

Living in Hawaii, I drive on hilly roads. I have to downshift and rev it pretty high sometimes to maintain speed when driving on an incline. This truck certainly won’t win any races, but it is a fun truck to drive if you love going thru the gears in a MT.

If you can get the truck for a good deal, go for it. Love my 08 and I never regretted buying it.

It was listed for a decent price but had been in the mud a little more than he let off. Had some frame rust that we had to pass up.
