Subwoofers

What would happen if the magnet diameter on a box says it is based on a 6" diameter magnet, but the subwoofer that i want has a magnet diameter of 6.7" Ill show post the links for the sub and the box. I know that it can only fit 10 or 8 in subs but what would happen if the magnet is too big in diameter

So there is a cutout in the back of the box that gives the magnet clearance. That hole is 6 inches and is designed to accept a magnet that is 6 inches. The sub you selected seems to have a tapered pole piece (back of the magnet) so it shouldnt matter too much.


Something to keep in mind, that box is designed for 2 10s or 2 8s, not 12s like you linked.

 

Modeling the 2 in a .5 cubic foot sealed enclosure. Sundown SD in red; JL TW in blue. Using specs for D4 drivers in parallel for a nominal impedance of 2 ohms.

Different opinion here. Assuming the same surface area, the scenario using fewer larger drivers will always more faithfully reproduce the signal. Why? The cone doesn't need to move as far to move the same amount of air. More excursion for the same output = higher distortion and greater group delay.

Not to say that one is better though. Some folks like distortion. Most like it. It makes things 'sound' louder. Lots of folks who hear low distortion bass after living with some don't like the way it sounds.

 

I think 99% of people wouldnt notice a difference between 2 12s or 3 8s in sound quality, The difference is so little. But just remember, a 12 inch cone weighs more than a 8 inch cone, so more force is needed to make it change directions than the 8 inch.

I like 8s for the faster sound, but that was in my techno days. Now I listen to 90s pop stuff or what ever garbage my daughter likes that was on tik tok. Single 10 is just perfect to make Natalie Imbruglia sound just right (yea I know, Im lame, but I like the song "torn" by her)

 

You said it yourself. That's why an 8 and a 12 typically don't use the same motor assembly.

This is quantifiable to some degree though and WinISD would be a good tool to demonstrate the idea. It will take some work to match cone area among the 2, but I'd kinda like to see the results. An even more telling series would be to model 15s, 18s, 24s with them - if you could ever find the right mix to match cone area.

Yeah, I think there would be upper limits to this scenario with traditional materials. At some point a paper cone would need to be far too heavy. Early poly too. Then at some point gravity starts acting notably on suspension. Composites would let you go bigger, but there'd be limits there too. Then there's practicality. The enclosure needed for a 32" woofer ain't practical.

 

We used a old bedroom book shelf as the box, we just put a front and back on it. I was 16 at the time and didnt know much about building enclosures, so I used what I had on hand.

 

Here's a modern 32 I drooled over at the Cedia expo 2 years ago. That's sealed. Cab is all the way up to meh boobs. The same folks make a 50", but it was more than they could fit on the truck. They said it's about the weight of a safe. I'd love to have something that size, but Ima need a bigger house first.

 

Yeah, that would be sweet home theater sub.... I have a single 12 in my theater, but I also have a pair of jbl 18 inch subs from my DJ system that I could hook up if I really wanted the house to shake.

what electrical would I need to upgrade for a 3500w amp i dont want it to be too expensive though

 

Depends on the brand of amp. If its cheap, then its probably not 3500 watts despite what the box says.

 

Its a skar audio RP 3500 and i looked at a dyno and it it 3500rms at 1 ohm is which i will be running

 

What subs are you going to be running? I cant imagine many subs that can take that kind of power and fit in a tacoma without loosing the rear seat. Not to mention the amp itself is going to take up half the back wall, and will need proper venting to not overheat and go into protection mode.

Guess I just dont see the need to push 3500 watts in a pickup truck.

But if you must run this amp. Your going to need 1/0 gauge power and ground wires, probably another battery, and you will want to install a upgraded alternator.

Your going to need to build a 2.75 cubic foot box for that sub, with 1 inch thick walls and a 2 inch thick front baffle... That aint going to be no center console box.

Not trying to discourage you here, but your looking to build something thats not a good idea.

 

Ill have a custom box made and invert the sub, the box will be smaller but thats why im gonna put extra power itll be about 1.8cuft-2
