Don't know what State you live in, but in some States DEALERS can't sell a vehicle that does not meet safety standards (won't pass inspection), even if they can ignore other problems. Frame replacement is not limited to original owner is it? My understanding is that it's all based on DOFU.

Contact Toyota and see what they say about the frame.

Just took my 2010 into the dealer . The frame is beyond repair as far as I could tell and thats with fresh fluid film every year since I have owned it . I would love to see Toyotas exceptable frame requirements .

Its not out of the replacement window. You have 12 years from date of first use (day it was sold new). I'm having my 2010's frame replaced right now

I'm curious, is the replacement approved only if you're the original purchaser new or does it stay with the Taco for 12 years regardless of how many times its changed hands?

12 years from date of 1st use follows the truck. It doesn't matter if it's had 47 owners. The ONLY things that will prevent you from getting a free frame in that 12 year period are
    1. The truck has a branded title. Salvage, reconstructed, rebuilt.
    2. Someone obviously punched a hole in the frame with a 1/2" tapered punch.

Varies by state. In NH, you can do an "as-is" and make it stick. In MA, a dealer can't do one, and an individual can be made to take it back if it fails a state inspection within 7 days.

I bought my 2010 almost two years ago and the used lot I bought it from told me it had two recalls on it. So I figured when I bought it if its got recalls on it it will be fixed at no cost. The first dealer i went to said my rear leaf springs were under recall. Then i joined this forum and learned about the frame so I went back and they told me it would get the spray treatment. I didn’t want that so I passed. Long story short I moved 20 minutes south of me and went to different dealer for an oil change and they came to me and said you need a new frame. So if i was you go to a genuine Toyota dealer and have them inspect it. These dealer get big claims from corporate for doing these frames im sure they will make it fail . Good luck

Ok, so I was approved by Toyota to get a new frame. When they sat me down to let me know what repairs they recommended I let the advisor know that I just bought the truck not even two weeks ago from a dealer. There was a bunch of other safety issues wrong with the truck which should have been taken care of before the truck was sold or left the lot (according to CT laws). He then asked me what dealer would sell a truck with a bad frame and other safety issues. I then told him that it was their sister dealership and his mouth dropped. He then told me we aren’t even going to discuss the repairs that need to be done until he talks to his boss about it. He then called me back not too long after and told me they will be taking care of the calipers, steering rack and components, and the eBrake cables that were tearing. I thought that was pretty awesome.

You can sit there and tell me that I should’ve checked everything until your blue in the face but the point is they should have never sold a truck like that without disclosing those issues, especially the frame. It’s the law in CT.

I’d still like to hold the dealership that sold me the car accountable for what they did.

Also, I’ve been reading that many people were able to provide their own parts and get them installed labor free since the car will be apart anyways. There’s things like the steering shaft, control arms and struts I’d like to get done but they’d be charging me for labor. Anyone have any more information about this?

Typically if the part Hass to come off to do the frame they will replace it with a new part for free but not all dealerships will

If they got to take it off, normally they will toss whatever new parts you want on for free. If their is extra work on their end, expect an extra bill for that part.

Thanks for that info. I guess I didn’t bring it to the right dealer.

The frame issue is a corporate recall, so that part is a given that it would get taken care of. The rest... well consider yourself lucky As a person who has been in an on going lawsuit with a dealership since 2016, I can tell you how the Toyota dealerships work. The dealerships are locally owned. So ANYTHING that is not under direct Toyota Factory warranty or recall is 100% under the authority of the owner of the local dealership and Toyota USA has no legal liability or authority. And you have no recorse what so ever except to go to court. Toyota USA can not and will not step in when a dealership does something shady. My guess is that the dealership was worried about bad PR news story for selling a deadly truck so they agreed to fix everything.

As both a Toyota and Lexus owner, I can tell you that both are great vehicles, but the biggest thing you pay for with a Lexus is the fact that Lexus is Corporate owned and Toyota is locally owned. Meaning, no matter ware you in the country, with a Lexus, you have Corporate support, if a tech or sales person or anyone does something wrong.... one call to an 800 number and its taken care of!!!!!

With Toyota... a salesman could spit on you, a tech total your truck and a dealership owner kick you in the nuts and you call Toyota USA and not only do they not care, but the way the franchise is setup, legally they dont have to do anything.

i never understood why some are like that, when we do frames, we almost encourage people to do shocks and what not.. why? it makes our job easier!

Because some are more interested in your money than actually helping their customers out. It’s kind of sad really.
