so were you compensated for diminished value? Your truck has been in an accident now and is not worth the same amount as before

Only if it was claimed through insurance. If you pay privately, none of that goes on record.

Yeah but you still need you tell the buyer if you’d sell the truck. I don’t see a buyer saying, nah, that’s ok, without wanting to reduce the sales price

Tell that to carfax...I was hit by a drunk driver that only put some minor scratches (no worse than offroad pinstriping). I never contacted my insurance or submitted a claim, as I was able to buff the scratches out. No claims, nor any contact with the driver that hit/scratched my truck and low and behold, a carfax search of my VIN shows the accident. Not sure how that works, nor do I really care, as the truck is paid off and I was happy with the price when I bought it three years ago.

I did not. I was at the hospital visiting my wife and the truck was parked. Apparently the guy sideswiped several vehicles (mine included) and all I got was a sticker/notice on the window that my vehicle may have been damaged and to contact the PD. Never followed up with the PD, as damage was minimal/non-existent. Maybe that was my fault for not acknowledging/fighting the victim of a hit and run.

This. But at least the mistake was fixed right away.

I would suspect that since this was a pretty major incident someone likely filed a police report or made a claim through their insurance. But there's nothing stopping me from crashing my truck into a tree on my property, then taking it to a body shop and paying for them to do some repair or paint work.

At least in Canada, Carfax usually only knows when insurance or the police are involved. Body shops don't "report" their clientele.

Ahh!! If the police did come out, they may have made a report of all the vehicles hit and would have entered your vin in their system. Then when carfax does a vin search even though you didn’t file a claim your shows having been in an accident. I’m betting.

I didn't pursue the diminished value route. Not worth the time/effort in my personal opinion... this isn't a limited production car that has substantial value. It is a 20k pickup truck.

Dealerships are a PITA to deal with, and while I agree-they screwed up and they should pay for it, I just don't have the time to deal with all the BS of asking for diminished value etc.. My pickup truck wasn't perfect either.

Huh, that's interesting I guess I should look my truck up... I had an accident about 2 months after I got my truck:mad: where some idiot in a big rush ran a protected left turn after it turned red and forced me to T-bone him. Pretty sure his car was totaled; both side air bags deployed but nobody was hurt, only took out my bumper and bullbar which I'm not that big a fan of but after the accident I was super happy the first owner installed it...lol I actually had to call the police because the other party was being very belligerent even though they caused the accident. While the police were on the way the guy driving next to me pulled up where we were stopped and offered to be my witness, if I didn't hit the guy who ran the red he would have. Really nice guy him and his kid were going to play ball at the park but he took a half hour of his Saturday morning to help me out. ANYWAY, to the point: the police came and they would not file a report even though there was an accident and the guy was being belligerent and kept trying to avoid giving me his information. The policeman was able to help me make sure I got his ID and insurance(which was under another name...) but he would NOT file a report because according to the officer it's not a reportable case since there was no physical harm to anyone...

Maybe it's a BS California thing, like nearly everything else here...:notsure:

If the police don't take a report in CA, what does the insurance company use to assist in determining fault? Just your word vs theirs? I've only been in 2 accidents and the police took reports both times w/ no injuries or even substantial damage. Once was in TN and the other was in NJ. That seems crazy to me that they only take reports if injuries are sustained.

Corporate would be able to pull Toyota from the dealership if they did not fix your truck to your satisfaction. They could, but they won't.

Must be some Cali bullshit. In Texas if they police show due to a complaint of any kind you’re getting a case number. That’s crazy in your state.
