Leaking rear end help

Any one got some advice on a leaky rear end, it’s an 03 reg cab 4x4 that’s spent its whole life in the northeast, not really interested in swapping it out cause any one I get around here will most likely be as bad as the one I’ve got. I’ve got a friend who offered to braze it, he did one on a tundra. Any advice is highly appreciated Thank you!!

 

Is it rusted through? How bad? Some can be patched some need to be replaced.

Leaking from the differential? Or leaking at the ends near the drums?

If you can get it clean enough brazing might work.

Buy a housing from the South shipping might be expensive.

Some have welded on a new cover without pulling the differential if it is you doing it and you cook the bearings it is your expense

 

Kinda vague, is it cracked? Coming from the pinion seal, from the cover?

 

It’s weeping from the cover, like I said I’ll post some pics in the morning

 

Try tightening the cover bolts a little.

Sounds like it is leaking at the gasket. I have doubts if it the leak is through the cover, if it isn't cracked.

Many times a simple solution exists.

 

I used this on my old camaro years ago, without a gasket, never leaked.

In this part of the world the covers tend to rust through if you don`t keep after them

They are only about a 1/16" inch thick if that .

No bolts to tighten it would be nice if it was that easy

 

Oh yes absolutely that part of the world, 3 months ago it was fine

 

My 99 4Runner rusted through. There are a couple of companies making complete patch covers that weld on. I took my third member out, stripped it down and had it welded. I found the supplier on a 4Runner site, if I can dig up the name I’ll post it.
I think it would be very difficult to weld with the third member in the truck, but not impossible.

 

Look for a Dorman 926-993 repair panel, I found it on eBay, it’s a weld piece that you have to cut away the rusted portion of your pumpkin. The part number could be 926-933, sometimes I transpose numbers!

 

They dont make replacement covers anymore?

 

The rear end does not have a bolt on replaceable rear cover. It’s a stamped steel piece that’s welded from the factory, a poor design. On the 4Runners some guys are swapping Ford Explorer third members to get disc brakes. Mine had an e-locker that I wanted to keep. Look at yours and you won’t see any bolts on the back side, only on the front where the differential bolts in.

That’s the one I used on my 4Runner. Make sure you get the right one, e-locker rear ends are different than regular ones.
