I bought a used 06 tacoma quad cab a few weeks ago, and right away I noticed going down hills it seems like I didnt need to ride the brakes to keep a steady speed as the truck seemed to down shift on its own coming down hills.. and just a few days ago now i need to ride the brakes all the way down big hills. what gives? should I take my truck and drive it up the dealers ass?

our trucks have engine braking. when coasting fuel is shut off to the cylinders to save fuel.

Mine is weird like that also. Sometimes the engine braking kicks in, other times it doesn't. Haven't really found a rhyme or reason to why it does what it does...

its kind of irritating, it was a nice feature and now it doesnt work. and I cant trust the dealer to fix it because they couldnt even tighten my lug nuts when they put new tires on! the only thing I can think of is i took the battery out to fix some rust on the battery tray. maybe disconnecting the battery did something...

Just throwing it out there, but I know on my 2010 Jeep Wrangler the dealer upgraded the software on it recently and it made the engine braking less aggressive. Possible yours was upgraded before you bought it, and by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting you rebooted the computer causing new settings to take effect?

By the way I'm new, but I just bought a 06 Tacoma last week, so im interested in any info more experienced members may have. Is this a plausable explaination? Cheers!

yea i had the same thing, i was about to change out my trany fluid, i bought the filter and gasket, then i found out our truck are non serviceable trany's, only by toyota or unless u have the right machine to heat the fuild. So glad i found that out or else my taco would be in trouble.
But about the slowing down, happen to me coasting to red lights and down hills, i got new tires, load range d, and it seams like my tires help my wheels coasting and dont really feel the breaking in as much as before, becasue they are heavyier than the stock, but thats just what i think from my expericince, but i dont get the slowwing down any more.
