New pioneer head unit connecting sub idea, could use advice

So im waiting for my new Pioneer AVH-P3200 DVD to get delivered, since i can't stand waiting i was reading some info about the headunit off of crutchfields site and was interested when i read this part:

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.
CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the AVH-P3200DVD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs are as follows:

• CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
• Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
• Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

After reading this, the first thing that came to mind is maybe i can get a sub sooner than i thought by hooking up a sub with out an amp for now till i have alittle more spare cash to buy a decent amp. So to get the point my question is how would i go about hooking a sub up to this radio without an amp? And is this going to run a chance of damaging my new stereo this way? I have upgraded my headunit once already and all the current speakers but i really know nothing when it comes to subs and amps so any advice is welcome.

 

I wouldn't bother. It looks like a classic underpowered speaker situation waiting to happen.

I'll agree with the previous posts that this will probably not sound all that great unless you are driving a small efficient sub with it, even then, questionable.

But there isn't any reason you can't do this as part of a system build-up. adding a sub off of the HU amp is not best, but may be OK until you add the next component, just don't size a sub based on the HU, but on the amp and the other components that you plan to get to.

Very few people can buy all the components they want up front, and I'd suggest the better way is to build your system up component by component with a plan in place. That way you get to hear the difference each bit adds.

 

If you attempt to connect a sub to your headunit, dont expect any "sub" type activity. There arent any crossovers built into the deck so itll just act like a big, underpowered speaker. You're better off getting some 6x9's and turning up the bass.

 

Not true, this Pioneer has HP/LP capability built-in.

 

And now you lost me lol what is HP/LP capability?

 

High Pass/Low Pass filter, or the crossover that was reference a post before mine. High pass allows only the high notes (over some setting, like 80Hz, 120Hz, etc.) to go through, while the lower notes, bass in this case, are filtered off. Low pass same thing in reverse,,,, only low notes are passed, high notes over the crossover setting are filtered.

For a sub want a LP setup, for main speakers with a sub want a high pass.
