I have a 2020 SR5. I installed the OEM tailgate kit a couple days ago alongside the bed lights with zero issues. I did not disconnect the battery. The most time consuming part was definitely the zip tying underneath and trying to fit those clips back into the tailgate. That was a mild pain in the ass.

I'm in the middle of installing this and running the cable under the truck. The directions say to run the cable along the body harness, wire tying it to the harness along the way. The only problem is that on my truck, the body harness is on the drivers side, not the passenger side. Has anybody else run into this? I'm trying to locate places to tie the harness to the frame along the way.

I had the same thing on my 2020. I just ran mine down the frame and used as many points as I could find to zip tie it to. Didn’t end up using all of the zip ties but it is very secure and won’t be going anywhere.

My 17 was the same way. I just routed it via the top of the frame.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't worried, just a bit concerned.

Essentially what I did. Of course one metal zip tie wouldn't lock and one I had to cut because I placed it long. Thinking about buying a package on Amazon and wrapping a few around the frame just to keep that insulated section far away from the exhaust.

Maybe this is why the BAM website insisted it wouldn't fit my truck. Mine was made in Mexico in February of 2020. Maybe it's a production difference.

On the bright side, I now have a lot of nice black wire ties! ;)

Thanks. I wonder if there is a different kit for the trucks with the body harness on the left side? Probably not, probably just an "Oooops" by Toyota.

This kit is intended for 2020 year trucks that have a harness on the passenger side. When i asked dealer, they said it would not fit mine. Its been working flawlessly.

I believe the wiring harness that runs on the passenger side of the vehicle is for the in-bed power outlet, which we don't have on the SR5s. Shouldn't matter for the install as long as you secure the harness where you can using the zipties.

I tested it about 20 times during the install process. It works great with manual switch and my remote start. There's a bit of drag when I use the key in the tail gate lock, but that's to be expected.

    I'm satisfied.

Were the slots in your frame for the metal wire ties? At least that's what it looks like from your picture.

That would make sense, I guess. Since mine is a SR5, it has no harness on the right side.

I was just a bit surprised that no one mentioned it before. Not that it would have changed my decision to buy it. I always lock my tailgate and got sick of having to do it manually.

Looks good. I just couldn't find anything like that. Plus I was aggravated a bit because my wife went to go shopping and a rear caliper is locked up on her Highlander. Seems like the parking brake actuator on the right side didn't release.

She has an appointment for Monday and I think I'll see if AAA will tow it there. If it's just a stuck actuator maybe, just maybe, it won't need a new caliper. Which it definitely will if we drive it the ten miles to the dealer.

It's always something, if it's not one thing, it's another. If it's not this, it's that.

Just did the install. I have not done something like this before and it was as easy as advertised. Two hours total including putting tools away when done, which often adds weeks to my project timer. I got the OEM kit from BAM for under $130. Three days from order to arrival and I paid for regular slow shipping. All parts correct and present.

Follow the instructions found first on post #13, and reposted at least twice again later and you really can’t go wrong. I did not use a lift. I’d note that the 16 T30 screws on the tailgate are not identical. The 8 along the top have a small spacer since they go through two layers of plastic.

Some advice: an extra arm joint between the wrist and elbow would help when working around the exhaust pipe. The most challenging part was the dirt falling from the truck as I put on the several thousand wire ties (I think 27 or so), so doing this out in space where dirt does not fall down would help. Since we don’t have a working space shuttle, you might just settle for safety glasses.

Many thanks to the nearly 600 previous posts. They left no room for questions or common mistakes like which floor grommet to use and whether you should thread the wire harness from the front (yes) or the rear of the truck (no).

    Great thread. Great forum.

Welcome to the wonderful world of working on your own truck! ;) All of that crap falling in your face is a constant challenge. It's a bit better if you have a lift because you can dodge, but it's still a PITA.

Definitely having an extra joint in the arm would help with any mechanical work. Speaking of exhaust pipes, it's always good to give the truck a while to sit and cool off before you start. Those pipes get hot.

Follow up to my previous posts on installing the cable in trucks without a cable on the right side of the truck. The stainless steel wire ties showed up today and the weather was okay. The ones I got are a bit longer than the OEM ones. More importantly, they are also a bit more narrow. As a result, they fit neatly in the holes on top of the frame. I added three, including one at the front of the area where the foil starts. For that one, I used two straps end to end and went around the frame. Now, the cable is nice and secure and away from the exhaust.

Good to know. I'm waiting for my new tailgate panel from the Bare Outfitters Group Buy to arrive, and will install that and the remote lock wiring kit at the same time.

In the meantime I'll eventually crawl under the truck and figure out what holes I'm going to use on my SR5.
