Alright, I posted a thread a couple weeks about snow traction ideas. At the time I didn't have enough cash to invest in 4 new tires so I was looking for solutions. 220 pounds over the axles has helped tremendously. The last 10 days Ive been in Big Sky where about 4 feet of dry snow has fallen in the last 10 days. I drove on everything from hard pack snow and ice going 50, to breaking through about 2 feet of snow, to mixed pavement with slush in 2wd. Ive down more winter driving in the last 2 weeks than I ever did in 4 years in N. Minnesota. Barley every use the brake and very light on the gas seems to be the trick. The point of this thread however is about NEW TIRES. I just got a work bonus and can put about $500 down on some tires, so how about some opinions?? Also while I respect everyones opinion on here if you live somewhere where it never snows or you rarely use 4wd in the winter, maybe save your time. Anyways heres what I've been looking at so far what do you guys think?
    HANKOOK: DYNAPRO I*PIKE RW07 $117/per tire
    BRIDGESTONE: BLIZZAK DM-Z3 $127/per tire

    Thanks

I have the Blizzak DM-V1s, the new version of the DM-Z3s. They are excellent winter tires. I have been through deep loose snow, hardpacked snow, and glare ice and have been impressed everywhere. They make the handling a bit squishy on dry pavement though, and the tread is pretty soft so I would not want to leave them on if I was taking a long trip in warm weather.

What do you mean take them off for long trips with warm driving? Im guessing driving from Montana to Minnesota in January wouldn't be considered warm, but what about driving to Utah with 50 degree temps. How are they on the highway?

I commute 30 miles one way every day on freeways at 75+ and have had no problem with the Blizzack DMV1. Impressive in the snow as well. Ice just OK but I'm talkin steep grade ice. I'll be swapping out rims come spring and hopefully get several seasons out of them.

What I meant by that is the rubber is so soft I would be concerned about wearing them out if you were doing a lot of warm weather highway driving. I would not leave them on if you were going to drive to Disneyland for a 2 week holiday. The tires are great when highway conditions are bad, they add a huge margin of safety. Since the treads are tall and soft they do soften up the handling a tad on dry pavement but nothing worth worrying about.

If you have the money the Nokain Hakkas are supposed to be even better, they are carbide studded and look to be about the best winter tire you could buy. However there is only one Canadian distributor and their prices are insane, it would have cost me $1450 to get 4 Hakka 5 tires with install and balance. More than 2x the price of the Blizzaks. If they are much cheaper in the States I might take a trip down in a few years for my next set.

I have Blizzaks on my A4, they are great, what really amazes me is the braking, they just grip.

some of this, a little of that

Just remember that if you want a tire studded it has to be done before you drive on them. Once you have driven on them most shops will not go back and put the studs in. I say go with a good studless winter tire, the Blizzaks are sweet. :)

Cooper Discoverer M+S are a great winter tire. Pinned for studs if your seeing a lot of ice, if not I wouldn't bother. Not sure of the prices down south but I had these on my 1st gen and they were excellent. Another way you can save some cash is to go with a bit narrower tire. 245, 235. Nor sure what size your planning to run but the 235/85/16 cut through the slush and snow as well as give a bit extra height.

Good tyre, I have them on my tacoma, but the Blizzaks on my A4 put them to shame when it comes to snow.

Wait a minute. Let me see if I understand you correctly. You are comparing the way an all wheel drive audi drives to a Tacoma?
