2005 Tacoma Master Cylinder (and booster?) Upgrade

    Anyone know of any viable swaps for the 2005 Tacoma? I know that SOS has a kit but it's nearly $300. I'm not opposed to swapping in a bigger booster while I'm at it...I've heard of people using Tundra boosters/masters?

    A 2012 tundra booster and master is a huge difference combined with rear discs

    No, it won’t fit his 2008.

    The Camry master cylinder only fits 2009+ Tacoma’s. I learned this the hard way. I read on here that a Camry master cylinder would bolt right in so I ordered one from the dealer. It does not fit a 2005-2008 booster. I pissed away $200 on one.

    EDIT: the Camry master cylinder swap might be for 3rd gens only, not 2009+. Port size, flange, and actuating rod length are all different from my 2005, and I’m pretty sure all 2nd gens use the same port size (m10-1.0).

    What didn't fit? The flange, the actuation rod, the brake lines?

    All of the above. I was so peeved I took side by side photos using my caliper to measure the ports, but then realized that thread you linked to (the one I discovered last month) is in the 3rd gen forum. At least I’m not the only one who didn’t notice!

    The Camry master has 12mm threads, different flange, and different length rod. Now that I think about it, it’s probably a 3rd gen only mod and not just 2009+.

    The port sizes, kinda expected, but the flange distance between centers is a no go then, then have to swap in the booster as well.

    Might as well swap in a Tundra booster and master then, no point in swapping a single diaphragm booster for another single diaphragm. The Tundra booster is dual diaphragm.

    Just wanna say that I highly recommend the 4runner BBK. Not that much more expensive if you need to replace a lot of the parts anyways. Still on the pad break in but it already feels better and will only get better.7DF3F2FF-25A2-4C1C-8459-B33F284976AB.jpg

    I have a 4th gen 4Runner axle hub to hub I've been sitting on for a while, was wondering if I can do the e-locker swapper on it like the 3rd gen 4runners and 1st gen Tacomas can be done, which axles to use etc etc...

    These are the 14WA from 10-current T4R IIRC. Mine are from a 2016. Not sure if the pro has different ones or not. Got them on rock auto for like $120 for the pair IIRC.

    I'll have to check mine to confirm but now that you mention it 14WA sounds familiar. I know I have 2015 TRD Pro 4Runner brakes on mine including the backer plates which were kind of a pain to install.

    Getting those hub assemblies off were the biggest PITA of the whole thing aside from the rear brake lines.

    I’m actually tempted to go get that 4th gen 4Runner axle. I’m guessing 4th gen 4Runner housing+shafts with a Tacoma 3rd member would work.

    Hey @billygoat , hoping to bring this thread back to life, I did a BBK in the front but still have the soft pedal issue. Truck stops way better but was hoping to improve the Booster and Master Cylinder. Do you know which year Tundra's will fit the 2005-2008 (I have a 2008)? Been eyeing the SOS kit but I really want to do the booster along with it so may try and get one from a salvage or online. Appreciate all the help.
