Ok Jim. You're over on the west side correct? I'm usually free during the week after 5 pm. I could scoot around there or we can see what this weekend will hold. Maybe early (before noon) this Saturday?

 

I decided against the pine tar. I bought the Jasco boiled linseed oil and a half pint of Minwax Oil Based Penetrating Dark Walnut Stain. I'm going to mix a little at a time and test it on the old handles. I want to just pull the darker grain out to make it prominent. I decided to just use these two products and keep it simple. Yearly follow-up coatings will just be linseed oil. I plan on using it on all my wooden garden tools too.

Here's how the heads looked after a soft wire brush.





Here are the finished products after some dish soap and fine steel wool, and then a thick coating Ballistol. Including the inside of the eyes.



I think I am going to still hit them both with the wire cup to brighten them up. I honestly think the bits were dyed because it seemed I was able to clean some of it off.

What is the deal with this linseed oil being so flammable. I must have read the same warning a million times reading reviews on using it for this. I hate to say it but the crazy in me is going to have to experiment to see if all this hoopla is true.

The one antler sits lower than the other one so that may be why it looks off. I'm not climbing up on a metal roof that's covered in wet leaves! I'm up here bymyself, if I fall no one will hear or see me lol.

That sucks Russ. You just pushed the limit or had a misstep? Is the top of that LCA pushed in (down), it looks crushed? Or is that how it's suppose to look? We can do the work up here this Sunday if the weather holds. Or if you want, after I get off in the evening, one night during the week. It will be dark before we finish but I have lighting. I have all the tools except an axle puller. Maybe you can rent a slide hammer from an auto parts store. They rent tools. I'm not even sure you need that for the passenger side though.

Jones Toyota is going to install it for me for pretty cheap (I was really surprised but have a good relationship with their one service person) She even told me to get an axle from NAPA because they charge too much at toyota LOL
So I bought an axle from Napa then they'll throw it on tomorrow.


Blu didn't go, she would of loved it though. Not allowed to have dogs on any of the trails in the smokys I guess due to bears?

 

Let me know if you want some help or moral support when swapping the axle. The boot though you're on your own, I dont want anything to do with that mess lol
