Replace at 6yrs or keep running em.

I have a set of BFG KO2’s that are approaching 6 years on the truck. They probably have 40k miles on them but 50% tread life.
I travel off road and on gravel sharp rocks monthly. Is it best to replace given the age or run until they are worn out?
I am leaning towards replacing for peace of mind, but curious if anyone has additional insight.

 

Really depends what shape they are in. You’d be the best judge of that. I can’t see them very well from here

I’ve read they should be replaced at 6 years. And the truck sits in the weather year round. But they look to be in good shape.

 

I would replace them.

40k miles? Shit where I live they would be bald by now.

DOT says 6-10 years. If they are in good shape without belts showing and visible damage, chunking or deep cracks, I would run them. The rubber won't be as soft and they'll ride stiffer and not grip as well for traction, but I don't see why not. I may not take them across country, but I would roll them around town.

I don’t think I’d run them another 6 years.

It’s your call, they look ok enough for me to run them a little while longer.

I have ran tires longer and in worse shape.
I would not advise anyone to do this.

my biggest concern is them failing off-roading.

 

I have to confirm next time I get them rotated. I purchased them for my previous truck and switched them over. I average about 7k a year-so assuming there close to 40k. But they have 8/32” tread left.

 

I would keep running them. Just make sure to inspect them regularly and also understand that as rubber ages it loses it's flexibility.

 

What’s the date on them?

 

Gravel dust and sand dry your tires out, you can see a little bit of dry rot along the tread blocks of those lugs but it's not bad yet.

I'd say so long as they haven't gotten slippy in the wet yet you're probably okay but I would replace them within the next few months if those were mine but I'm kind of a worry wart.

I had a set of pre K02s BF Goodrich ATs on my old 02 Tacoma. Still had decent tread at 8yrs and went antelope hunting in the lava rock country in Modoc CA.

First decent pointed rock in a 2 track punctured right thru the cords on the LR tire ruining it. Go figure.

 

8 years is impressive. But yeah-that figures right.

I'm always a bit paranoid about tires because of my motorcycle experience.

Rule of thumb for motorcycle tires is 5 years, then replace.

4 Wheels are more forgiving than motorcycles. Still at the 5 year mark, I begin tire inspections. Specifically, looking for signs of cracking on the carcass between the tire lugs/tread grooves. If cracks are developing, then shopping begins. Typically, I land on Michelins for new skids.

A wife and 2 daughters, I really don't want to bug out in shitty weather to handle a flat on their car. I will also do a complete inspection prior to a long road trip. Break downs on the Interstate really suck. I've had a couple flats on Interstate, both on the left side. Very uneasy and unnerving changing tire when traffic is zipping by at 70+ mph just few feet away.......

Anyhow, I'd suggest to inspect the tire for any cracking between the tread lugs and in the rain grooves.

 

I used to run old/bald tires until I got a blowout on the freeway in the fast lane. Fuck that shit.
