I don't either, how is it supposed to complete a circuit with one clamp?

Could be a resistor if the gauge/meter on top is part of it

I figured that its some sort of grounding plate to check continuity of a plasma or welding system. Forgive my ignorance on that subject but the wall plug could provide a ground and the clamp would clip to the grounding plate. You'd use the multimeter to see what you're getting through the spark to adjust or calibrate your welding/plasma system. My guess is that its a calibrator of some sort.

Well, looking at the plug again, it doesn't have a ground strap on it. The switch is switching the ac plug sending a hot to the multimeter and the clip is tied to what could be a resistor via the testing leads. The ground of the multimeter is connected to the shield of the resistor. From there, I don't know. Its definitely an adjustable resistor though. Its not exactly this one but it looks like it. Man, these sleuthing things are fun.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve found that we’re buying the kids a lot of larger things (that they should probably get for Christmas) to try and fight the boredom. We also have a lot easier time justifying the expenses since we’re not going out and easily spending $100+ on a day trip out for a family of 4.
