Your father's service in no way qualifies your statements. If you haven't served, you can't sit here and tell me how it's going to affect morale and unit cohesion.

If you remember, I am not a proponent of removing the policy immediately. You, however, are out of your lane.

    That's a good point.

I would imagine that many troops would lose that respect -- which is unfortunate, since they should be judged by the quality of their aptitude instead of their sexuality -- and it would be hard to wrestle it back.

I would hope that a good soldier would be recognized by his/her skills and qualifications regardless, but it's true that's not the way it works.

I also agree with the "bigger fish to fry" argument -- but since that wasn't the topic of the post, I feel this is a good place to discuss it.

Although, I know a good number of straight Officers and NCOs who aren't respected by their subordinates, and they are still in charge of their units.

That's fine. The U.S. Military is subservient to the U.S. Government, which should be subservient to the people.

But don't micro-manage us. We're point and shoot capable and we prefer it that way. Tell us where you want us to go and what you want the end state to be, and we'll do it - just don't tell us how to do it. The last time the people and politicians micro-managed the U.S. Military, Vietnam happened.

Now the thread is getting way off topic from both sides. It's time for a lock, or at least lock it for a few hours.

Tell your Dad things change. We don't carry M1 Carbines or drive Jeeps anymore despite the fact that "back then they worked fine". Technology changes. Society changes. The Military adapts.

Because most people learned it was wrong to discriminate based on sexual orientation since then.

For persec reasons, I really don't feel like telling the guy who's been debating half of TW over his nuckin' futs view of DA-DT any details that will let him make contact with me or my chain of command. Nothing good can come out of that one.

lol The days of the cold war are over if you haven't noticed.
The wall came down a couple of decades ago....

I retired tactical communications in 2007..............granted not the front lines but certainly not conus or behind a desk, my last unit was an IBCT ..you can look up the acronym ... as their 6.
Kudos to your Dad though for serving
And you can certainly volunteer in some capacity,
Each state has a military dept that takes most civilian volunteers in support of their state military operations, most don't need a military background.....
you can support stateside emergency operations,
    they even give training.....
Put some action behind those ideas........

I'm torn between the issue. One side of me says stop whining. There shouldn't even be a vote. This is America the land of the free....

but then if gay men can shower with straight men why can't straight men shower with straight women? I know there is a lot of service members insecure with showing their members to homosexuals and they have every right to feel that way. What will happen? Will we build separate barracks and bathrooms? There is no easy solution but I'm going to have to stick with number 1

this is the land of the free and I personally don't care if I shower or serve with a gay man as long as he doesn't cross boundaries (ie starring, comments, etc.). I can understand the worries those who have never integrated with homosexuals but I have gay friends so I guess I'm a little biased but try to keep my mind open to the other arguments.

Did someone really say they don't like white people? lol

    kill whitey!!!!!!! :D

    (not directed at you, nomad)
sounds to me like some people's male egos get in the way. i have yet to hear a straight woman complain about showering with a lesbian. it's not like the showering hasnt happened before, it's just that they had blinders on and didnt think about it. they do say that ignorance is bliss...

I think being gay is wrong but I dont have any problem with people who are gay because they have there own free will and can do what ever they want. I even know a few gay people who are good people but it does not change the fact that it is wrong. I dont see what is wrong with dont ask dont tell. It works why change it. The military is not supposed be accomidating to everyone it is to fight an enemy not make people feel good about there life decisions. It will hurt recruitment for sure.. maybe not right away but after pictures start popping up of men making out in uniform it will be an embarassment to the rest of the people in the military. The fact of the matter is a large percentage of people see male on male homosexuality as gross whether you do or not it is a fact and it has a stigma attached to it and I dont think its something that should be distracting military members already hard life. we are fighting in countries where people get stoned for being gay and we are trying to win over there hearts and minds. I dont think that will help. Its not a good time to have open homosexuality in the military just to many issues.. maybe some day but not now..

None of the things you claim as absolute or matters of fact are.

Most people don't want to hear about other peoples sex lives at all...I don't want to hear how my co workers did whatever thing with their wife/girlfriend last night any more than I want to tell people about my wife and I. Gay, Straight, Animals, Solo....It has NO bearing on work. People should mind their own damn business and concentrate on what matters instead of making an issue out of something that doesn't effect them.

As far as guys "making out" in uniform- That's not an appropriate photo for anyone to take. There shouldn't be photos of straight couples mauling each other in uniform either.

My view on it is this: Why should your sexual orientation be an issue? If you can do the job and keep your hands off of me then there is no problem. If you want to get into the military do it and keep your mouth shut about it. Just because you like to smoke pole doesn't mean your incapable of taking a bullet or sending one down range.
