We have been using it with our heads toward the rear just because of the windows and the location of the hatch, but I think we are going to try with our heads to the front because of how easy it would be to get in and out of bed.

I too am in the market for a 270 awning. After looking at the awning brackets and how they are mounted to the shell they seem to be stout and Id imagine they can hold a little bit of weight being mounted in the reinforced corners and all.
Did you come to a resolution with yours?

Having the front window slightly opened and the roof fan blowing out creates a nice draft and helps condensation exit in my setup.

So the heater was acting up recently. I tore it down today and the combustion chamber was FULL of soot and buildup. Will try to kerosene trick from now on to see if it mitigates it. We run it on the low setting most of the time. From what I now understand that is the main issue Im having. I have also heard if you run it on low for a while you need to crank it up to the highest setting for about 1/2 hour before turning it off. I guess we will have to try and run on medium more often.

I also really wish someone would come out with a more intuitive controller for these. Would be awesome to control from phone and easily set timers etc.

So, someone else has come out w/ an alternative controller. It's called the afterburner, but there's a waitlist on it. You'll need to email Ray directly about it. http://www.mrjones.id.au/afterburner/

But yes, these units are not recommended to be used at Low for any reason. They're based off Webasto and Espar heaters. Those units only had timers originally and never utilized Low-Medium-High settings. They've always recommended that they be run at maximum output and to be sized accordingly to the space you're trying to heat. Obviously we camp in different locations so there can be problems. Propex heaters are best if you camp in warm climates basically above 40F and are in altitudes below 6,000 feet. Once you push to and past freezing and or above 6K elevation, Diesel and Kerosene have zero issues running. Burning 30 minutes at max before shutting it off could work, but it's depending on how long you're using it on Low, that could just be kicking the problem down the road.

Kerosene burns clean, for sure. But you can try mixes/methods to resolve your issues:
    1. Kerosene and Diesel
    2. Just run straight Kerosene
    3. A tank of Kerosene every few tanks of Diesel
    4. Only run Diesel at max and open a window

yeah I'm going to run with that awning and just keep an eye on the brackets. I called and asked about doing a 3rd bracket to help with the weight and plan on using the polls majority of the time its open to help support the weight when its extended. The brackets look like they can handle it, but its still a lot of weight which makes me worried. Time will tell with this one I guess.

Curve ball with fire restrictions and fossil creek being closed. Looking for camping suggesting near AT after I pick it up. I'll be fighting daylight as install is scheduled to be done at 3pm.

Looking for places near prescott, in between prescott - sedona, and just all around other suggestions in AZ. I'd be happy just getting lost on fire roads and camping, but definitely look for some more middle of nowhere back country trails and spots. Looking to get lost & not bother any and have no one bother me!

    Cheers!

Figured I throw this out as a general reminder to check the connectors on the ends of your Habitat support rods. One connector unthreaded itself on the trail earlier this month and fell on the ground without notice when the tailgate was opened. Fast forward several hours later when I saw the exposed threads and my jaw hit the ground. Holy shit. Hopped back in the truck and hauled ass back to the lunch spot to beat darkness. My buddy saw the connector laying in the sand where we had parked. Anyways, got lucky and plan to get an extra connector just in case.

Taking another break on the trail and along comes @Taquita. First time I've seen another habitat in the wild besides my own - sorry, not the best pic. Taquita has a sweet rig - gives me some hope and ideas of what could be! Good times hanging out that evening with good people. Great way to end a trip.

Yeah buddy! The rod connector falling off is a habitats owners worst nightmare! I did not realize the connector could unthread itself from the the rod. As you told me that wild story about your connector being lost and found, I looked over at my rod connector and discovered mine was just a few threads from falling off the and being lost in the canyonlands sand. I store my rods on the outside of the rig which is risky, so i’m going to lock tite my threaded ends up.

Can’t thank you enough for letting us join you at the white rim camp spot. You and your crew are awesome!!!

No worries. Having both groups join was good for all of us. Kinda felt like there wasn't "anything" else to worry about once we climbed off that rim. Hopefully our paths will cross again. Cheers

Thanks for the info and advice shared in this thread. It’s been great to read about your experiences. You’ve talked me into serious consideration of the Habitat. Some friends of mine have flip pacs and the tent space and separate bed zone are great, but they’ve had mixed results in weather. I’ve read a good chunk here and done some basic web searches but haven’t found any info on what it’s like for tall people. (This is cross posted from the expedition portal Habitat thread).

Are any of you habitat owners tall? I'm curious about the space under the awning. I haven't seen one in person yet, but like what I've seen and read. I would like to be able to cook, work, and hang out under the awning. At the very least, I just need to not hit my head, but I would like a bit of clearance so it doesn't feel too cramped.

I'm about 6'3" and would plan to put on 2nd or 3rd gen Tacoma with ~2" lift and ~33" tires.

I've estimated the clearance underneath at 76 3/4 inches. (70.6" Tacoma roof height spec + 2" lift + 1.25" tire radius increase + about 3" clearance over roof guessed from photos and looks like awning is in line with the bottom of the cab over portion). Has anyone measured this with a similar setup?

Any experiences or subjective guesses welcome. Thanks!
