Hey guys, I own a 2012 Tacoma been having a whirring or whine type noise from the rear. I’ve taken it to the dealership and they have told me the rear end sounds fine. Don’t know how much I trust this. How could I tell if it’s the rear wheel bearings? I mainly only hear it at 55-60 and can feather the throttle to recreate sound.

when was the last time the diff oil got changed? to check them, jack the truck up and pick up on the tires and try to feel any unusual movement/excessive freeplay.

I don't think its the diff. I never changed my fluid until 250k km. Never made noise. If it is there probably damage done to it?

Wheel bearing. Jack the truck up and try to move the tire from top to bottom and side to side. If there's any wobble most likely the bearing.

My initial thought was it’s not the diff either. I’ve hardly ever heard of these trucks having diff issues. What makes me think it is the diff is when I hear it at 60 I can feather the throttle and it will stop and if I accelerate past 60 it’s stops. Idk I just hope it’s not.

I would start by checking bearings first.

That’s what I’m gonna do. I’ve changed the driveshaft bearings and front wheel bearings. So hopefully I’ll find it’s the rear wheel bearings

Noice!! I'm pretty sure the rear bearing are a pain. Need some special tool I believe and a shop press.

Swap front and rear wheels to see if it moves to the front so you can rule out a wheel/tire related issue.
