Fuel pump troubleshooting

Hey folks,

Did an engine swap this past weekend, got everything squared away and it drove great for the first 125 miles. Then out of no where on my way home today it just died on me and the RSCA and trac off lights came on. I had a p0456 code before I left work, I cleared it and it didn't come back. I was assuming it was time for a gas cap.

Now the truck won't start at all, just cranks and cranks. I took the fuel lines off the fuel rail and it didn't appear to have any fuel pressure. After removing them completely and trying cranking the truck, it didn't shoot out any fuel out of the lines. Does this sound like a fuel pump gone bad? I understand that the truck only delivers fuel when you start cranking so that's why I took the lines off where I could see them and cranked it. I'm going out to change the fuel filter now but I was wondering if it sounds like I'm on the right track or if y'all have any troubleshooting tips I'm all ears.

Also I am unable to pull any codes now since the truck won't run.. so I'm kinda flying blind here

 

Computer still works with ignition on so you can still check for codes that were tripped/stored before the truck stalled

 

Try starting fluid.

 

Check the EFI Fuse and the IGN Fuse.
Check for 12 VDC at Terminal # 3 of the C/OPN Relay.

Fuel filter was clogged after only 12k miles. Fired right up after replacing. Thanks for chiming in gents! So glad it was an easy fix, too dang cold to be stuck on the side of the road with issues

 

Where are you buying gas? Third world country out of a 55 gallon drum?

I hope that you're correct and it was just a fuel filter... Seems odd that a fuel filter would be clogged after 12K Miles. I have doubts.... I hope I'm wrong.

 

Haha as usual JimmyH was spot on correct, fuel filter wasn't the issue. Truck fired up first time after replacing the fuel filter but I guess it was some freak coincidence bc I went out there 20 minutes later to go drive it and it just cranked and wouldn't start. I pulled the IGN 15amp fuse and it looked suspect. Almost like it was close to being blown but not quite there.

Anyways, I think I've narrowed down to when this happened... this weekend during the motor swap, my dumbass didnt disconnect my solar panel from the positive terminal and when I went to take the alternator off, the wiring harness for it touched the body and sparked a little. I knew I probably messed something up, but wasn't sure what it'd be.. so I'm hoping that's what would've caused the IGN fuse to blow.

After replacing the IGN fuse with another, it has cranked up first time about 7 times in a row now. I'm still hesitant to call this one solved, if I do I'll probably end up on the side of the road tomorrow

What do y'all think, does it sound like I have found the smoking gun?

 

Do you know how to ohm it out with a multimeter? That’s a fail safe way to tell if visual isn’t conclusive.

edit: if not, you can always pop this sucker back in and see if your troubles come back

If it wasn’t, I’d probably start pulling the relays as @Jimmyh said, then play the Key-On/Off game.

Yes I am planning on doing that tomorrow when it warms up a little.

I did swap the c/opn relay with the one from the horn and it didnt make a difference. Hopefully the fuse takes care of it, fingers are crossed!

Im no expert, but it's really easy to make a stupid mistake when literally everything has to come apart lol. I'm surprised the swap went as smoothly as it did, but definitely grateful to have the truck healthy again.
