So you are saying I am wrong, but I'm right, but I'm wrong but I'm right. :boink:

I did say I am not an AMD fan but Cyrix was complete crap. I never bought that junk but at my work they spent millions on it and it gave us headaches for a long time.
Yes I am old and have been doing this for a long time.

Intel isn't perfect either. I bought a Motherboard one time that used XMS3 memory. I still have the useless 1600MHz 6GB DDR3 sticks laying around for some reason. It took a while to get the word out but the CPU and RAM did not get along at all. I spent a lot of time to figure that one out.

All the parts I ordered are in but I have to back up what's new since my last one before going dark until the upgrade is complete. Then I will move the old stuff to another older CNC computer to upgrade it as well.

Thinking back to the good old days. Upgrade every 6 months and spend half your paycheck.

Depends on perspective I guess :argue:

My point was more that Intel never gave anything freely to AMD. They didn't help them out. IBM forced Intel to give over their initial IBM compatible designs to Cyrix and AMD, but Intel pulled back and sued AMD over those designs the moment IBM was no longer in control. AMD existed pre-Intel building other integrated circuits. If anything AMD got their start in the CPU market building second source chips for Intel, but then became a true competitor when Intel tried to cancel the arrangement that was forced on them by IBM.

I'm also an 80s baby. I didn't really start building PCs until the late P3 era but I had been taking them apart and working on them since my parents bought us a 386. Man I miss the 486 turbo button lol.

I've got a great story for you. Cyrix isn't dead! I know, WTF? Yes, the company died and deserved to. Unlike AMD who fought it out with Intel and pulled neck and neck with them on their own clean room designs, Cyrix fell way behind to the point where it wasn't even funny. They did come up with a fresh chip design in the late 90s though that had some promise. However, they didn't bring it to market in any sort of volume because they were actually bankrupt around that same time. Well that somewhat decent design made it's way through several ownerships before landing in the hands of Via. Via, if you recall, is the only other company that can legally build X86 processors under a separate unique agreement with Intel. Well, those old and slow Cyrix cores are now in a new shiny Chinese chip. I can't remember the name of it but Google is your friend for that. There's actually a few reviews of them out now and it's funny how fast they actually are. I mean they aren't going to win against any modern design but they're way faster than what Cyrix was pushing when they died.

The problem with Cyrix was that they were okay with being the cheaper, slower, option for CPUs. People, at the time, could put up with the odd hiccup out of an AMD system since computers of the era would randomly crash on Intel as well. Slow, cheap, and crashes a lot though was unacceptable. Cyrix deserved to die.

What did you go with for a graphics card?

Yeah, I remember when my parents decided to upgrade to a shiny new top end P1 system. 166 mhz clock speed and a huge 2 GB hard drive! IIRC it was over $5K for the IBM version without a monitor :annoyed:. It was also the last time I saw anyone buy an IBM computer for personal use lol.
Yikes, 2013. Yeah, that's the same story I told above. IBM forces Intel to secure a second source of CPUs, Intel tried to kill AMD when IBM loses hold of the market, AMD gets behind trying to reverse engineer Intel chips, AMD builds clean room designs to jump ahead, Intel catches up and passes them, and AMD almost goes bankrupt with their foundries are too large for the market. That's been the cycle for a long time. What's different now is that AMD has no foundries and Intel hasn't been pushing forward for a while. Intel will catch up, one day, but for now AMD is really giving them a headache. What is really hurting Intel is workstation performance. You can't seriously look at the Xeon lineup anymore without simply being an Intel fan. Threadripper and Epyc are just so much faster and AMD has never had that lead before.

I can't wait for the REEE tomorrow if the AMD 6800XT is actually a better card than the 3080 at almost half the price. That will cause some very sore nVidia/Intel fanbois to come out of the wood work. As a 3090 owner, I will also cry a bit lol.

I got it upgraded. I was surprised! I changed out the MB, RAM, CPU and Windows 10 didn't have a fit.

I did have to download the chipset and network drivers from another computer and transfer with a flash drive since the network card and CD-ROM didn't work.

EDIT: A few hours after it was running it lost it's license key. I had an extra Win7 key available and it worked.

    Monitor: TLC 50" 4K UHD 120Hz 4:4:4

EDIT: Waterblock, you mean the hoses? not much you can do about that.

I didn't want to pay more than I did for the pre-made one.

Red Dead Redemption 2 online every night right now.

Pre ordered Assassin's Creed Valhalla Gold

Far Cry 5 (kind of bored of that)

    Older Assassins creed versions.

Oh the logo. Yeah I have another plate I'm going to replace it with tomorrow. I can right the ship at that time.

After that post I was playing RDR2 and the fans started going full speed. It was loud.

I quit and installed the Corsair icue software. Settled down the fans and I changed the LEDs to slowly fade white then blue.

More fitting of a Storm trooper PC.

Well first step of the upgrades is here and done. Samsung G7 27". Dont like how it sits on the desk so ordered a VESA arm to move it back a bit. But other than it being a bit to close for my liking (due to my desk), its a nice monitor.

Bit bottle necked to do to much 1440p till the new system is built. Been playing a ton of Raft recently though so 1440p is no problem for that lol

1998. I had an Intel 440BX system with a Pentium II 400 version 1. They had a recall and were switching to RamBus and sent a replacement. The rumor was everyone was going to have to switch to rambus at like 4 times the price. It was the new thing and sooooo wonderful. Rambus, the future is here. lol

Windows 10 OEM and System Builder keys are now tied to the motherboard. You change the motherboard and windows will act like you don't have a license. It's been that way for a while. You can call Microsoft to get the key moved once to a new motherboard though so don't lose that old key! You can probably use it next time.

I have that exact case. Bought it about ten years ago for my Z77/3770K/GTX 680 build. I passed it down to my brother. I liked the case but I didn't like how the radiator mounted when I switched to an AIO. It was designed right before AIOs were the big thing. Lots of space for activities though.
I hate iCue. It always loses my settings or messes with specific game drivers. Let me know if you have more luck.

That old G15! I haven't seen one working in years. I miss the built in LCD. I wish someone would bring out a keyboard with an OLED in it to display systems stats. I'd buy it.

Yup. You should read about what happened to the company that made RamBus after that. They had a short affair with Sony and used a version of their product in the PS3. After that though they couldn't find any business partners and just started suing the crap out of everyone since they have a lot of patients related to DDR memory as well.

In the memory industry they were known as Mr SueMe for a while. Hence my joke.
