I basically could give a "rat's azz" if someone is gay or not ... as long as they do their job well in the military.

I heard a good article on NPR the other day going into the finer points of the proposed repeal.

Aside from the debate over morality, there are some very serious financial and political concerns to take into consideration:

1.) What about health care for spouses of active-duty personnel?
Currently, the spouses of active-duty personnel can be covered under that troop's military health benefits. But what about in the case of same-sex partners? Thus far, Congress has left the decision on same-sex marriage legality to the individual states. But the military health coverage is a national program, and would have to decide on whether to offer that coverage to all members, regardless of orientation. This could put quite a bend in many states' legislation.

2.) What about free education for children of deployed troops?
Currently, the children of deployed abroad personnel can receive free education or tuition through the military. What about the children of same-sex married personnel? This is a nationally-funded program which again infringes upon state policies.

3.) What about homosexual troops deployed in countries where homosexuality is illegal?
Someone brought this up before, but when troops are deployed, they are subject to the laws of the country they are stationed in once they step off base. What does the military do about this situation when it arises? Are homosexual troops required to remain on base? What about work field deployments or travel from base-to-base? Does the US refuse to acknowledge the laws of the country in this matter? Does this create a slippery-slope to an eventual disregard of all national laws?

I found the piece very thought-provoking. I'll see if I can dig it up. It's interesting to look beyond the morality question and see what other types of obstacles would be in store with a repeal.

EDIT: Found the article. Read or listen to it here.

Lol ya and because people just love drama I don't see why people even care if someone wants to be gay let them it dose not mean you have to be and I'm pretty sure being gay isn't a transmittable disease or is it (evil laugh).

No but it does make you incapable of liveing in very close quarters with other guys in conditions so cold you have to spoon or so hot you are half naked without sexual feelings. Most Mos's will not be greatly affected. Ones that live in remote area's or spend alot of time in the feild will. On top of this is discrimition issues and the fact that when the ball starts rolling where does it stop. Chicks in combat arms?? the army is not a buisness. Dont ask dont tell is not discrimition, it a a regulation. If you dont like dont join but stop fucking whinning about wanting to suck a dick in combat.

And guys like you are the problem.
    1) It IS discrimination. Jim crow laws used to be national law...and they were discriminatory. DADT is the same thing...and it's time has come.

    2) If a chick can hold up her end in a combat arms team...Why not?? I bet I know a few chicks that can beat a number of combat arms specialists at physical and skill based "tests."

    3) Last up- You don't have to have sex when you are deployed...Why is it your assumption that a gay guy wants to "suck a dick in combat"

So in closing- Why should someone else who may (or may not) have skills more valuable than yours be denied the opportunity to serve because you want to be a bigot?

I used to think the same thing- And here I am 4 years later- An O3 and I have to worry about personnel issues. Not this one...yet...but who knows what the next 15 years will bring.

It is not by joining the armed forces you give up rights others have.

CHICKS CANNOT HOLD THIER OWN. they are emensly better at alot of things but an inshape girl is 10-25 percent body fat. Less muscle and not held to the same physical standards. Their max is our miniums for age requirements in a pt test.

and in closing because you want to call me a biggot I will simply remind you your deployments and mine are diffrent. VERY diffrent. I have many friends that are gay. I have stated many times here, against popular opinion that I believe people are who they are. Fact is however the armed forces is not US SOCIETY. WE FOLLOW DIFFRENT LAWS TO PERFORM A DIFFRENT TASK than society. They can get over it because our job and unit contiunity is more importand than someones effing feelings
btw if you want to call me a biggot i will be more than happy to attack you personally next time as well---Coastie

I'll quote Jim Crow scenarios again-Blacks used to only be cooks in the military- Now they are in every job. Because the brass realized that it was discrimination. Just because it's the "military way" doesn't mean it's right.

And you get to face the fact that the "different law" the US armed services follow are going to change. DADT is going away...and you get to deal with it or get out.

I sent you the definition of the word bigot: A prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from their own or intolerant of people of politial views, different ethnicity, race, class, religion, sexual orientation or gender.
I don't think many people will disagree with that. Derogatory comments about gays, rude comments to others-You've pretty well covered it. If you feel attacked by the truth- Maybe you should think about what you spout off next time.

PS- I'm not going to bother trying to compare deployments/jobs with you. You have a set of challenges I don't have- and I have seen/done plenty of things that you haven't.

I have stayed out of the DADT mess for a while - but coming from a combat MOS, it does make a legit difference. If they start letting gays serve openly in the military they will need seperate barracks for them right? I don't know how the other "branches" ran their barracks - but I know in the Marine Corps I never saw any women racked up with men in the same billiting. I know that when I was in we had to live in extremely close billiting, ie on ship or squad bays, and that would not fly coed so why will it straight/gay?

And to all the people out there who want to start bashing me as "intolerant" - whatever.

The billets are based upon sex/gender, not sexual preference. I have still yet to hear any women griping about bunking w/ lesbians.

I know that being gay has no bearing on work. But the military has a conservative image to uphold. I know that Kissing in uniform is prohibited by the UCMJ but is that ever held up. Of course its not and they have many popular photos of men in uniform kissing women after coming home from the war. I think that it would happen and there would be a photo.. that is my opinion. As for facts it is a fact that a large percentage of people in the US and the world find male on male especialy and any form of homosexuality to be gross. Its a fact no matter what you think. Any part of the world that follows any abrahamic religion are not very receptive to homsexuality. my opinion is that it would indangers troops lives slightly more but I may be wrong about that one because it has not happened yet so who knows.

On the other side of the issue I would be more open to openly gay people, women, and any other person serving in the military if they had the exact same standards as every one eles. They would all have to share the same bathrooms and showers. all have the same physical standards...If we are going to start blending people togeather and "pretending every one is the same" they should actually treat every one the same and not give some people rights and not other.. hey why we are at it, we should let them get married too.. and you should also be able to have multiple wives and women should be able to have multiple husbands. its only "natural" right.. and the goverment can pay for all of them and all of there kids. and if you dissagree with it its hate speach and you are a homophobe hatemonger...

I'll share some real life shit with ya'll.

My second unit in the Corps did have a closet homo. When most of the guys only suspected it he was treated differently - after he had been caught in the act he was treated worse than differently. Not by the chain of command, but by his own squad.

All of you "older and educated" types have to remember one very important thing - the people who have to live with these guys are all 18-24 years old. Rational thought and acceptance really isn't most young men's strong suit. I was there when that guy's sexual preferance became public and I'll tell you that tolerance and understanding was not one of the things on their minds.

im telling you all right now if they start letting gays serve openly it will cause huge problems in any combat MOS. im serving right now in a combat MOS and hear everything people say everyday. it will turn out bad. EO complaints will go through the roof. good soldiers will start getting in trouble for saying certain words. and the list goes on. this will turn into a huge issue. bigger then it is now. they need to leave don't ask don't tell alone. at least until we are not at war

That is why they are talking about doing it responsibly. We don't have the funds right now to accept this change as it is going to cost $$$ to re-organize.

I personally think this issue is blown out of proportion. I don't think anyone that is servings sexual preference should be an issue. As long as people keep their preferences within respect for others there shouldn't be any issue. The only ones who have the issues are the ones who live in "traditional" standards.

Like I said, I was a 11B and there was a guy, 22, gay and we all knew and didn't care. Its not like he tried to butt rape us when we got drunk. We were all brothers and thats all that matters. If someone is willing to volunteer for the armed forces then they deserve the utmost respect period.
