I was in the marine infantry. My advice to you is, go Air Force or Coast Guard. My body is breaking down and it’s not a slow process. Get all the benefits and do as little damage to your body as possible.

Eh, it's actually at like age 24 that your body begins to go downhill. At 18 your brain isn't even fully developed enough, and you don't have enough life experience to make a conscious decision about a career path.

Seriously tho, do your homework and see what you want in life. I wish everyone had to serve at least 2 years. Regardless, do what's best for you.

What? Downhill from 18, that is an Al Bundy fable. I didn't peak physically until 28 and now at 55 I still get around. Your body is a machine, God willing, if you take care of it then it can do some amazing things.

28 is when my body started to go to shit after I got out at 22. IED blast and impact landing on your joints will do that. I was huge into my personal fitness and still try to keep up with it but my body is fighting me everyday.

Yup back is toast, knees are all but on the verge of being replaced, migraines. I had reconstructive shoulder surgery in 2017 cause of an injury sustained overseas in 2006.

If college is on the table I would at least apply to an academy. It's far better to go in as an officer than as a private.

That's the thing. You have to do a lot more to take care of your body at an older age to maintain good physical condition. Testosterone levels reach their peak around 18 before declining throughout the remainder of adulthood.

I miss the food from Iraq and Afghanistan and the sun rises and sun sets. But the music was the worst. It all sounded the same, like an endless track

I thank you for your service. I do say I have been very blessed with good health and fortune to be in the right place at the right time. I thank God and never forget those that were not so fortunate. I see so many people that let their selves go to the waste at such early ages. It is an uphill fight for sure and it gets steeper every day, but never give up and keep the maintenance.

A huge majority of our military barely knows if the flat or pointy end of the bullet goes towards the front of the magazine since most jobs are not combat related at all.

For the OP, if you're unsure about what you want to do in life the military isn't a bad option. Find a job that has useful life skills and a short 3-4 year initial enlistment. If you like it then stay in, if not just get out and go on with life with some good benefits that you would never have received otherwise. Sure, you might die but there's only been about 2400 deaths in 19 years in Afghanistan and over half a million deaths in car accidents back home.

22 years in the Marine Corps...best decision of my life. Overseas for more than 10 years, still miss it.

If you go the college route and want to be an officer don’t limit your choices to just military academies. Plenty of choice going the ROTC route at the college of your choice. In my case I went in through AOCS (Navy) after graduating from college.
