spark knock and ignition issues

hello TW.....i am having some problems with my taco......when i purchased it, it was in-need of a new MAF sensor, and also had a lot of spark knock. and i do mean a lot. so i buy the new MAF and install it and instantly the truck runs much better, but i just noticed today that i still have some spark knock at lower rpms, and it is still taking my truck a good while of cranking to start up. What can i do to get rid of this aprk knock, and get quicker start times?

haha thanks for the limk....i do need a new o2 sensor and a cat. maybe thats doin it. I just want this thing to accually run smooth for a change!!!!!

 

new spark plugs and if that doesn't work try plug wires or you may have a bad coil back, is the cel on?

 

just put new plugs in no more than a month ago, yes the cel is on but i think i remember him sayin it was the o2 censor or a bad cat.....he said we nee to cut out the 2 cats and put in one longer one. This truck really dosnt run as smooth as i thought it would.....I mean for god sakes my jeep ran and idled, and even started faster and easier than the taco!!!

 

it takes more than an o2 sensor to do that because mines messed up and i have no cats but i do have a urd sim. but that should not cause it to run bad i would check plug wires or have the cel looked at again to double check.

 

i dont think my cel has anything to do with my spark knock or start up issues. as you said earlier its probably somewhere in th wires ir something......im thinking about looking into msd ignition and redoing the whole ignition system.

 

well looks like msd dosent carry anything for toyota......any ideas where i can by performance or high quality ignition parts for my tacoma?.....

 

e3 spark plugs.....never tried them but i wanna buy some

 

So what start up issues are you exactly having? Is the truck struggeling or anything? Or simply just takeing to long?

 

i have heard a lot of bad things about them plugs......i do hear there ok in smaller engines tho

 

long cranktimes, slight spark knock, rough idle......thats the main ones.....im seafoaming next oil change so maybe that will help, but it probably wont haha.

 

Take it to the dealer and ask them to reset the timing. Had something similar with our SC-300 Lexus. The timing was too advanced. When they reset it, the problem went away. If I remember correctly, ours was supposed to be set at 13 degrees before top dead center and it was set at about 21 degrees.

I saw somewhere else a very similar procedure for the 3.4 V6 so the 2.7 should be identical. Trust me, check and set the ignition timing.

I have been researching this some more. My problem is my 2001 2.7 Tacoma is located in Atlanta and I'm in Texas so I can't just go out and look at what I have. It seems , at some point in the Tacoma line, Toyota switched from distributors to a crank firing sensor and coil packs on the 3.4 V6. Not sure about the 2.7. I can't seem to find any info for adjusting the crank firing sensor and coil packs if that is what you have. I appreciate your frustration, so I'm trying to find you some reliable information.

 

Ok...go here for the 2.4 and 2.7, download manual, turn to page 67:
It has instructions for setting timing.

 

thanks for the help....i talked to my mechanic and he said he dosnt think it could be the timing, but im still gonna check it out.......i was looking for new parts cause i would like to beef up this truck a bit...i was looking ind the msd-6 off road ignition
