OK true story, I don't do this too often so...I was in North Vegas a few years back and went into a bicycle shop on a Saturday morning. The shop was actually still closed but the owner let my wife and me in. He asked me if I was a veteran? My wife replied while I was trying to figure out what his angle was. He told us to help ourselves to the coffee and snacks. There was a shop going on for Ride 2 Recovery. Teaching these wounded veterans to change tires etc on their bicycles. It hit me hard. I never realized a US Soldier could march into battle knowing how to operate a firearm, a tank a drown, a missile launcher, but not even know how to change an inter tube on a bicycle. I learned that day...

This man speaks the truth. Don't get married or knock a stripper up or next thing you'll know it's 2045 and you're retiring as an angry, twice divorced 1SG paying child support for three kids.

Start searching Military jobs by field and branch to get an idea what they are about.

I see a lot of put down on the Military, here. but Civilian life is no cake walk either. Both sides of the coin have pluses and minuses. Growing up sucks.

And isn't that the goddamned truth. We all look back at our past lives now that we're adults and try to tell kids what to do or not do based on our own journeys. Growing up sucks.

I'll say the same. Your military experience will either be some thing you love or hate depending on your perspective and attitude. Sounds stupid but I've seen people complain that they were bored in the most beautiful and busy places in the world. I've also seen people happy in absolute awful places.

Whether or not you should go depends on if you have a solid idea of what you want in the future. If what you want would benefit from military experience, join; if it won't but you want to serve, join; if it won't and you don't care, don't join. Easy.

Also be prepared for a lot of change if you join.

Well if I go to college I plan on being a mechanical engineer. I have a friend that joined the navy, the other joined the army, another joined the marines, and one that applied for the air force academy. They’ve been telling me to join so it might be peer pressure right now but I’ve always thought about since middle school. To sum things up, I’m basically lost on what to do right now.

If you can afford college, go and get your mech engineering degree. If you absolutely can't afford it, score well on your enlistment tests and try as shit to stay stateside with a job that gives you engineering experience and training. Assuming you never have to go catch bullets, milk the benefits for all they're worth after you get out.

He is signing about the love for his uncle not on a sexual way but in a loving family capacity. We had a "boardwalk" on our fob where the local irawis sold their swag and goodies to young privates lol. I was having some tea and hookah when they played this song, they all gathered around held hands danced and sang in sequence together. My sister and I were confused af. But a different perspective on culture for sure. Tea was good too

You can go in after school too... I tried to join the air force as a pharmacist last year. I would have gone in as a Captain, qualified for loan repayment, gained experience relating to my field as well as outside it if I ever wanted to/needed to ditch the profession... The finances weren't all that different from the shit retail job offers I was seeing. I figured I might as well suffer doing something for the people serving our country instead of lining pockets of CEO's that don't give a flying fuck about the patients.

After a few delays and cutting the selection from 18 to like 8, it didn't work out. I was non-select #1. I just saw it as wasn't meant to be. Moved on to something else. I would apply again if I wasn't on a 2 year contract where I am now.

You won't always know the right choice in life. Sometimes there isn't a "right" choice at all. Go with your gut and roll with the consequences.

My older brother is in college so I don’t know if my parents are able to afford college for both of us and my GPA is kinda low so not sure how much scholarship money I can get. Is the enlistment test like the ASVAB?

Yah it's the ASVAB. And if your parents are paying for your older brothers school without a plan to help you, then they're kinda dicks. Have you talked to them at all about your after high school plans? They may be willing to help you as well mate. Most parents want what's best for all their kids.

Depending on where you live, if you don't want to go military, there's usually a state university that's reasonably priced, and would work with you to get your degree.

I guess I have a couple more months until I need to make a final decision but I know it’s going to go by fast.

I am a Father of a Senior Airman in the U.S. Air Force reserves. I have watched this boy of mine grow up wondering if the military was for him or not and if so...what branch. Throughout High School he was a member of the Air Force ROTC. Here he studied and learned under an incredible instructor who had retired from the AF as a full bird colonel. He quickly rose to leadership and made his way onto the Drill and Parade Team. His senior year he applied to many colleges including the academy but was not accepted in to his top choices. This left him searching for direction. He began seeking out trusted friends who had served or were currently serving. His cousin, a Marine, pulled him aside and gave him some of the best advice. He said, if you are going to enlist then do it for the right reasons. Understand that you are committing to lay down your life for your country. While that may sound romantic...this is not a video game and if and when your number is called there are no do overs...he told my son that if he could do it all over again, he would get at least an AA degree first. That this would give him a leg up on the other cadets and provide him with options. He explored the various options and the benefits and disadvantages of each branch but ultimately told him it was his decision to make. This conversation must have impacted my son because he enrolled in school and took a job at UPS. Again he quickly advance to a lead shift supervisor but was never satisfied. 2 years and 8 months later he enlisted into the Reserves with a two year degree and was placed in a local unit as a Share Point Specialist. There are moments he regrets not going Active Duty but a year ago was picked up by a Military Contractor to do the job he was trained to do. He now lives in Hawaii and is part of an elite group managing the PAC Fleet. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t worry about him and the what if’s...there isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not incredibly proud of the man he has become...or thankful for his willingness to commit his life to support this country. Only you can do you. There are as many reasons to tell you don’t do it as there are to do it...But make sure your decision is based upon the conviction that it is what you believe is the right decision for you. As to what branch. It depends upon what your goal is. For my son the Air Force made the most sense based upon his interests and abilities. Don’t know if that helps...but I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers
