I have been searching for a Tacoma work truck for about 2 months now. My budget is $8,500 including FL state tax. I am getting a little desperate and looking at high mileage ones now. This is a Access Cab Taco and the owner claims that these are mainly highway miles. He is asking $7,000. Any thoughts/concerns on a vehicle like this?

Concerns would be the 250k mileage and maintenance history of those miles. Would you expect the owner to claim the mileage as anything else besides "highway miles" to avoid scaring the buyer? I would pass.

Stick with 2008+ trucks. Years prior the 4.0 had head gasket issues. The V6 is a robust engine though - you are probably fine, as long as those weren't hard, unmaintained miles. Ask for service records. If you don't need power, find a 4 cyl - those are also very durable, long lasting engine when maintained properly.

How long do you want to keep the truck for? If it's just a couple years, I'd say you're probably good either way. If it's something you want to hold on to for a long time, finding one with extensive service history is a must. Good luck.

I got my 2005 with 196,000 miles on it, I did budget for repairs and maintenance work when I bought it.
No maintenance history and I have to guess that everything was original (old design head gasket and all). That is on my list of things to address but so far, it has not been an issue.

I suppose the point is, if you're willing to put some more time and money into it after you buy it to make sure the maintenance is up to date, you'll probably be in good shape.

If that's not something you want to have to do, I might pass.

    Good luck!

Only the 2005 models and any 2006 produced before December 2005 have the older problematic Head Gasket issues.

At 250k miles, head gasket would a concern on any year model.

Especially if you don't know the history of the vehicle.

That's my predicament. I'm working on getting all the parts together to knock a bunch out when I dive into it.
