I just got one of those. He was a little slow due to cold weather. I try to leave our pollinators alone, but this thing didn't seem to care about that. What are they?

Thanks. I used a fine-mesh collander lined with cheesecloth, but it didn't do a great job. I've been eyeballing that exact unit on Amazon.
    Ordered!

Cicada Killers. Both look like Western Cicada Killers here based on the striping. The females paralyze cicadas to lay eggs in them. The females can sting but only if poorly handled ie. trying to grab them and squeezing too hard or stepping on one. The males are similar to carpenter bees where they'll harass you and be territorial but can't sting or harm you. They're not really good or bad but can be a nuisance if they want to burrow on your property

hahah it happens, i learn from you too. Also iirc they are pollinators but go for tree sap more often than flowers.
The asian hornets prey on bees and can eat something ridiculous like 40 a min when they're hungry and most wasps/hornets are predators to bees. I only know all this because i had some of these cicada killers and a white face hornets nest in my yard, and like you guys i thought these were the asian hornets or something of the likes. So i freaked out a bit and did some serious googling to find out what to do about it. Learned to mostly leave these ones alone; and torched the white face hornet nest when winter came around - awful bastards they are and do prey on honey bees fyi

Okay, but I live in Buffalo NY. Searching says they are native to western state and Mexico.

Yea i'm a little confused on that too. There's eastern and western variants but the stripes on the one in your picture say western??? The typical Eastern ones and all the ones i've seen here in jersey have much less yellow so idk
