Clutches are equivalent to the ATs torque converter. Clutches are a wear item, akin to brakes. MTs tend to see expanded brake life and less maintenance there. Clutch failure isn't really a reliability factor, some people cant get 50k out of a set of brakes, same can be said about clutches. There are plenty of people that have pulled 150-200k out of the stock clutches without replacement. I personally have logged at least 400k miles in MTs without once ever replacing a clutch. Two of which were Chevy Cobalts that both saw >150k on the clutch, one of them sold to a friend is now at 220k+ on the same clutch (just about everything else on that car was junk).

If, in the event that the actual transmission fails (not the clutch), the MT is cheaper than the cost of the AT. I have seen ATs fail from towing, I cant recall seeing a MT failure, but would be interested in seeing one if you happen to know of any.

Luckily the 3rd gen has a hand brake. Makes a world of difference on the steep. Old school techniques.

I've had manual trans small Toyota pick-ups my whole life, original clutch lasted on all of them and I would put 200,000 miles on them before getting a new truck.

Doesn't the 3rd gen manual have some sort of accumulator or something in hydraulic line? I remember reading about a delete kit someone made. Maybe this accumulator is causing problems?

Note, my latest Tacoma is a auto (hate it) because there wasn't a manual available within hundred's of miles.

funny and true. we had a Volvo 740T 5MT with a bazillion miles, can't remember how many exactly but ~270k iirc, all original. clutch was predicable and fine. sold it to a friend who was new to any MT, and the clutch was dead within one week. he paid up to have that replaced, and the next week he blew something in the transmission but i don't know the details.

I blew my clutch in 18k miles given I’m
on 35s. I also did abuse it. Street racing and 4500 rpm clutch dumps when off roading. If you really are driving it right and it blew that fast there’s no way it’s your fault. I beat the shit out of mine smoked it more than I can count and it still almost hit 20k.

Hahaha it drove fine once I got my stage 2 clutch and heavy flywheel. It really only started sounding weird once I got the ADM done. That noise comes and goes but my shops said they’ll figure it out for free. But at least I don’t cry about creaks clunks and rattles!!

I did the URD stage 2 clutch and pressure plate along with heavy flywheel. I also did ADM delete. I'm thrilled with the engagement. I did have an annoying squeal for a while.. but it just magically went away. I'm about 5k miles into my clutch.

    How do you like it?

Did you see the YouTube video I posted of the noise? did it sound anything like that? Other than the noise that happens the ADM + URD upgrades makes it drive like a beast. And I can have my foot off the pedal and still move forward w the 35s.

    This noise https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c6GY77-PVM4

comes from under the truck in the tranny
Engagement didn’t change and shifts are fine

    @b3itz

this not the normal creak although
It sounds like it in the video. I’ll get the creak rattle clunk and this all at once :)<

nah, can you link me? i don't see it anywhere.
i have a video of the sound mine was making somewhere. We took it back apart (did the clutch job ourselves) and we think it's the metal ring in the pressure plate floating around. Mine only happened when the clutch pedal was to the floor. The sound stopped upon letting the pedal out

Edit: Thanks for the link. Ahhhh i hear it. Hmmm it's really too short to tell. Did the sound consistently do that as the pedal was to the floor? My sound continued the entire time the clutch was to the floor... but only sometimes. and more times than not... until it stopped magically lol

We think my sound was this thing fluttering around when the TOB presses against it

Turns out i don't have a video from in the cab, sorry. and it hasn't made the noise in quite a while. the only thing that changed was the weather :santa2:
Catch yours doing it in a longer increment

Edit: Also... i did the clutch job, broke the clutch in per the URD instructions, then did the ADM delete later on

If I ride on it hard or keep the rpms up it will return if I baby it all day it won’t make a noise. It won’t keep the noise going much longer after I have the clutch to the floor. Oh well I’ll figure it out like I said shifts are fine no smells just another yoda noise.

Picked mine up 100s of miles away. Told 5 dealers what I wanted and said first one wins.

Their clutches aint right... I know a guy whose clutch roasted quickly out of nowhere... Same thing applies to this like everything else... If its under warranty, take it in. If its a recall, take it in.... If its out of warranty and no recall.... stop crying and fix it

ORs should not have hill start assist, Sport models do. Not sure with other models.
