Ah. If I see a Kia Forte with raptor lights I’ll probably stop driving forever.

or I’ll start driving with my eyes closed

What about light bars on a Sentra. I've seen at least 3, and they drive around with them on too..

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Dick move on their part but I agree, you agreed for them to perform the work so its done. Says in the tsb that only way to reactivate is to replace the millimeter radar; why not call a few junk yards to see if they have one, pop it in and have someone local with Techstream run the calibration for you. It's worth a shot.

Wow, having read this, and having an understanding of how poorly they have handled with frame rust too, I have learned to NOT buy Toyota again. They sound like VW -- a bunch of arrogant assholes. I enjoy my gen 1 Taco but perhaps it is just best to drive it into the ground (I drive about 4000 miles a year, it will take awhile) and not consider Toyota more than cheap wheels.

Really? what part of this was toyotas fault? They handed him a paper waiving his rights away, but he was too busy on his cell phone to read it or ask the advisor what it was and just signed it. Now he realizes what he signed was to remove a function from his truck because he put an after market grill on.

The paper he signed is to prevent toyota from being blamed for a failed tss system that may be due to aftermarket equipment.

I guess it differs from dealer to dealer. I have a 19 OR and change out to trd pro grill the minute I brought it home and later put on the 2020 oem led headlights to. Went to all 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25k service and they never mention anything to me about updating or disarming my tss sensor.

It sounds to me like Toyota didn't bother taking even a minute, or a concern, to explain to him the problem or what they where really going to do. Add to that their solution of ruining the system, such that you have to buy the hardware again, and you don't get love from me.

That’s pretty funny I have multiple upgraded parts on my Taco and when I go into the dealer for my service they don’t even bat an eye at them. As far as I can even remember we have never even discussed them, and my grill is so far from the original it’s pretty hard to miss.

Well, next time read things before you sign them. Thats the take away from this.

Also, thats not really toyota fault for not explaining, maybe the service writer could of waited for him to be off the phone, or maybe he could of read it instead of being on the phone and just blindly signing it. But the sheet of paper he signed explained it all.

Thats because none of those services are for this. He went in and got a recall done on the sensor. The recall says right in it that they will disable it.

They dont go turning things off in your truck at will, they did a recall, the recall said if the user has a aftermarket grill, lift, or bigger tires, that they can not perform the recall. They either sign the paper and the tss is disabled, or they ask for their truck back and leave without the recall being done.

As for people complaining about it being permanent. This is a liability thing. If you signed the paper, and they turned it off only for you to turn it back on again then they are liable again for it. If you sold the truck with a grill that is not approved for this sensor (and you turned it back on after toyota turned it off) and the sensor fails and causes a crash then the first person that the victim would go after is toyota.

It’s true I should have taken the time to read the waivers... instead I just trusted what the service guy was telling me “we just need you to sign these waivers before we perform the recalls” ... to me it sounded pretty harmless as if it was just some extra paper work but now I know somewhere on there it probably said something about disarming the TSS. It would have been nice if they gave me a copy as well. Regardless I can’t help but feel alittle deceived... if I was told directly and was given more information regarding them disarming my pre collision system I would have taken it more serious. What’s done is done I guess. I’m not terrible worried about it and worst thing that can come from it is paying $400 for another one and if I traded it In at the same dealership I would just let them deal with it

Try and turn it on in the center screen menu in the gauge cluster. If you can turn it on there, then it's just set to default to off, which can be changed.

Yeah I tried that. It won’t let me switch it on so I guess they disarmed it with something that connected to the TSS

So what was the name of the dealer and what was the name of the service writer? Have you posted your story on the dealer's FB page? :stirthepot:

In the case of this module it also makes a little sense on their end. You are modifying something that’s relatively complicated and sensitive and designed to stop the car from running over a kid darting out in front of the car or something similar. If your modified sensor fails, you run over a kid that would have prevented if it was working properly, who do you think the lawyers would rather sue, us lowly owners or the dealership who knew the safety feature was tinkered with? Now, not saying the modified grille doesn’t work just fine, but seems like they don’t want to take that risk.

If the light is bothering you, get a little black sticky circle and put it on the dash over the light. Does nothing for the modal, but the light won’t be so bad.

I had to go in to the dealer for the fuel pump recall and they said there was a software upgrade/recall on the PSS sensor. OK, so I drop off the truck, they put me in a loaner and do the work. Pick up the truck a few hours later and the light is on on the dash. They take it back and try to fix it, no go, the unit is bricked. They order another PSS unit for the grill, I go back a couple days later, get a nice Avalon to drive, and they replaced the sensor and all is good. I have the factory Pro grill and they didn't even blink. Adaptive cruise works as always and I am surprisingly OK with how it all went down.
