So my 06 dc 4.0 developed a cold start whine over a year ago. It starts about 30 seconds after starting, and stops when coolant temp is around the 130 mark or 5 minutes. I have replaced belt, all pulleys, tensioner, power steering pump, power steering reservoir, alternator,ac pump, water pump...the only thing I haven’t done is the fan clutch. I have done the spray everything down with a water bottle trick to no avail, also done a stethoscope and cannot pinpoint where it’s coming from. It’s literally making me go bad shit crazy any help is appreciated. It sounds like power steering wine but zero noise turning the steering wheel back-and-forth and like I said the whole front of the truck is new even the rack and Pinion.

What kind of belt? Ive had problems with cheap Bando belts. There's actually 2 kinds of Bando belts for the 4.0, a good quality bando that the dealer uses and a cheapie that's for sale everywhere else

    Hahaha
It’s looking like I live with it more and more each day hahaha..
I just feel there is definitely something causing the noise so why not try to fix it you know? In the local Toyota dealer told me to spray each belt contact area with a mist of water and see if it stops. They keep thinking it’s pulley misalignment, but they haven’t a clue either...and for music....I got that covered

Next up for today, I will remove the belt and do a cold start. Apparently I should of done this sooner. Does anyone know if I will get a check engine lights if I start it for a couple minutes without a belt?

No check engine light. You'll see battery warning and be careful with the temp because the water pump isn't turning

Thanks for all your help I greatly appreciated it. I just started the truck with the belt off and the whine is still present. Headgaskets and timing chain were done res entry, but whine was way before that! Looks like I will drive it till she blows haha as I’m not tearing it apart. I feel like an idiot I could’ve just taken my belt off before I spent the last year replacing all the stuff

I had a whine sorta like that on my '07. It ended up being a transmission noise, but nothing ever actually broke while I owned it. I finally figured out it was coming from the trans while doing an ATF change. It didn't go away, but I could really hear it good when I was under there with my head next to the body.

Haha haha yes...I’m one of those ocd buggers”hence the wine driving me crazy”...the truck has 320k so she’s served me well and still runs like a dream. Next up is a mechanical oil pressure gauge check this afternoon, But for some weird reason I am at peace after finding this out ha ha Ha.

When mine did this turned out to be a bad alternator. New one made quiet as new

Get a mechanic's stethoscope and keep checking things 'til you find it. The annoying thing about noises like that is that they teleagraph so well through all the metal in the engine compartment. Is it a rotary noise? Does it change with engine speed?

Mine does the same thing. A little louder when it's colder outside. Replaced a few things but the whine remains unchanged. At this point I'm just chalking it up "one of the noises this particular truck makes". To the more engine mechanically inclined members, could this possibly be a noisy oil pressure relief valve? Seems to be located in the right area.

    Cheers.

You don’t have an electric fan by any chance? If it’s tied to RPM and it does it with belt off, I would start with the harmonic balancer. Get you stethoscope and start poking around that area.
