The key in life is to make as much money as possible working as little as possible. The older you get the more it will make sense lol. 80+ hour workweeks sounds like a fucking nightmare to me

Though in some industries I understand it's importance in order to get ahead

No kidding. I do anywhere between 43 and 57. Cant imagine doing any more and actually still be functional at the end of the week. Good chance I'd find a way stab myself with a mouse.

I have a hard out at 5pm Mom thru Fri and I think it may even have had a role in why one of the higher ups wanted to put me on part time before I got moved back to full time. But my daughter goes to bed around 730 and I'll be damned if I only get to see her on weekends when we all live in the same house. It's more important to me to be there especially when she's this young only once.

I will put in overtime if it's needed but what drives me crazy is the last minute projects they bring me 430 and expect to get done before I leave when they'll realistically take a few hours to do. That and since I'm on salary I don't get overtime, F that

My father was a corporate workaholic for the same company 30+ years, climbed the ladder and made great money. We never wanted for anything growing up as kids financially speaking. But there were other big issues in my family unrelated to money. I've had many a talk with my dad in the last few years since my parent's divorce and he's told me several times, if he could go back and focus less on work and more on family he would do it in a heartbeat. I don't want to end up feeling that way

Totally agreed. Family is important. In the railroad biz there are so many people who divorce because the job just destroys their personal lives because the hours are crazy and never convenient.

I'm good with extra hours on occasion, but not regularly. If one week is 50+ hours, I won't even hit 42 the next. My boss gives comp days if the business specifically asks you to work extra in certain circumstances, like weekends. Feel like I have it good, actually.

Yep. Mine was the same way, but it never really came up explicitly. He was just gone alot, and I don't really know how that affected us kids. We're crazy independent though.

He also worked till he was 72, I think because the last project was with people he really liked. But he passed away at 76, just as he was getting used to retirement. Life is short.

It's like they say, no one on their death bed ever said 'I wish I'd worked more'.

Except I think @Sperrunner might end up being the first

Making a lot of money doesn’t mean anything if you can’t use it. I got that

At your guys' age when you're single with no kids I don't think it's a big deal, if anything it's good to build up a nest egg for later in life. Soooo many people nowadays don't even have a grand set aside in a rainy day fund. It gets harder to save when you get older and the bills start coming in. Do it when you're young lol

You can burn out at any age though so it's good to know your limits

One thing I wish I had done way earlier is set up an IRA or some kind of investment savings account. I waited too long to do it but better late than never.

Or invested in some satellite communications stock back in the 90s, I'd be rolling in it now. But I was like 5 - 10 years old so

I get bored if I don't have enough to do. Sure I can always find stuff to do, but I like a little bit of structured regimen to my day.

That said, in my mid 30's, I care much more about my work being meaningful. Making the switch out of the private sector now (hopefully).
