So if I'm reading this right you need a 5000 series cpu to use smart access mem? which means if you don't have the amd cpu to match you take a 10 percent performance hit?

One more. It just wasn't complete with a non lighting back fan. It had to match the others.

Yeah so far not good. It plays fine until I play RDR2 then all the fans go into high speed and it is VERY LOUD!
Even with a custom profile (quiet fan settings and LED light settings).

Today I tried running the iCUE program and leaving it open then playing the game and it behaved much better.

I will mess with it more but I might end up having iCUE auto run on startup and be done with it.

Looks to be correct. Smart Access is only for 5000 series (so far at least). Also key is 500 series chipsets. It looks to be more like a 5-11% gain

Also sounds like partners are going to get to make 6900XT and they wont be AMD exclusive.

AMD has done a damn good job, you could easily sell the 3090 though. Lots of people still want that card for beyond gaming that the AMD cards won’t be as good at plus true RTX and gsync.

And they decided to honor the orders they did get. Even ones they canceled they will go back and fulfill. Course it might mean a bit less stock in store but good on them for good customer service.

About 3-5% in most games. 20% in any game that Microsoft Game Studios put out since its the same tech used in the new Xbox.

I'll keep it. Unfortunately the true purpose of this card is Cuda acceleration in some imaging programs I use. The 3090 is still better for that, though honestly if you don't get a hard on for Cuda or DLSS it looks like AMD owns nVidia for now.

Just to remind people AMD isn't the first company to do this. For YEARS Intel paid off Adobe to make sure their editing suite only used Intel IGP products for accelerating certain tasks so that their CPUs would look like the best value for content creators. AMD applying what they learned with the Xbox to the PC for memory acceleration is just tit for tat from what I can see. It's AMD finally getting some exclusive love from Microsoft.

I bought the best i could afford at the time (2017 Macbook Pro 15” 2.9ghz, 16gb ram, 500gb ssd), and limped it through video/media school. What i learned is any mac made after 2014 is going to fail and need repairs within 2-5 years. Mine, i’m told its the logic board that failed. But the keyboard is also trash and ports on the left side no longer work.

It also overheats and locks itself up randomly. So i installed mac fan controller.whatever and have the fans set to max speed every time the computer is on. Done with all that mess. No more modern macs. Ever since the loss of their original founder, whoever is running things and cutting corners is a completely shit. /rantover

My 2008 iMac I owned to jailbreak early iPhones was a complete piece of trash. Right out of the box the SMBus was messed up and would randomly shut the fans off until the iMac would overheat. Apple wouldn't let me ship it back free so I had to wait locally for parts for almost a month on a brand new computer. Then once the local Apple tech store fixed that the logicboard fried, probably from the heat. I asked for extra warranty over the two years I purchased and they refused. Sold it at the end of year one because I didn't want to deal with anymore issues.

Point being Apple QA on their computers has been brutal for a while. I feel like the only reason they are really going ARM is so that they can make outrageous claims about their awesomeness while transitioning to even worse cooling solutions and batteries.

Go with a system like mine but with a 5700XT or 2070 super or something like that.

The nice thing is if he buys in the new year most of the dust should settle around graphics card pricing. Personally I'd wait and see where the 6800 shakes out, or the 6700XT if the rumors are true that it's ready to go in the new year.

some of this, a little of that
I am looking at Arctic MX-4 thermal paste, I liked that it was non-conductive in case I did something dumb. I'm going to try to get one of the AMD processors this week and with a little luck a GPU in a few weeks. I have a corsair 360mm cooler for the processor coming in today.

Noctua NT-H1 is what I'd recommend. It's non-conductive but has better performance than MX-4 and stays a lot more pliable for longer which increases the effectiveness over time of the paste. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and Noctua NT-H1 are basically all I use now depending on the application. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is, IMHO, the best non-conductive thermal paste available but the tubes age extremely quickly, becoming thick and hard to spread, so I don't order it unless someone specifies that they are looking for maximum thermal performance.

Whatever you do don't order Liquid Metal lol. Not only is it conductive but it has a whole bunch of drawbacks on the chemistry side. I'm not sure why it's so popular when it basically slowly kills components.
